Namibia Agricultural Union
The Namibia Agricultural Union is a union of farmers in Namibia which represents commercial or non-subsistence farmers. The president of the NAU is Piet Gouws. Previous presidents include Raimar von Hase and Jan de Wet. The NAU is part of the International Federation of Agricultural Producers, a global organization which advocates for farmers. Paul Smit, a farmer from Otjozondjupa Region, played a prominent role in the Union from 1987-1997, holding the presidency of the Union from 1993-1997. Namibia
Namibia (, ), officially the Republic of Namibia, is a country in Southern Africa. Its western border is the Atlantic Ocean. Raimar Von Hase
Raimar von Hase (born 12 March 1948) is a Namibian farmer. Career Raimar von Hase began farming in 1975. He previously owned land in the Hardap Region near Uhlenhorst, where he bred Karakul sheep, and other animal husbandry. This land was sold to the Namibian government in 2013. von Hase was the leader of the Namibia Agricultural Union, which represents Namibia's farmers nationally, from 2004 to 2012. He replaced Jan de Wet, who had previously served since 1994. As leader of the NAU, von Hase adopted a conciliatory approach to national land reform, welcoming constitutional reforms. Jan De Wet
Johannes Marthinus (Jan, Jannie) de Wet (10 November 1927 – 13 February 2011) was a Namibian politician and farmer. Politics De Wet entered politics as a member of the South African Parliament from 1964 to 1970. He then became the Commissioner General of Native Peoples of South West Africa from 1970 to 1978, as a part of the Apartheid government. While working in South Africa, de Wet was amongst officials who met then rebel organization South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Following the Turnhalle Constitutional Conference in 1978 and the possibility of Namibian independence, they left South African politics and entered White Namibian politics with the Action Christian National (ACN). International Federation Of Agricultural Producers
The International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP), (french: Federation Internationale des Producteurs Agricoles (FIPA)) was an organization that advocated on the international level for member farm organizations. Established in 1946, the organization was liquidated by the French Tribunal de Grande Instance in a judgement made on 4 November 2010, to proceed with the liquidation of IFAP after an economic and political crisis. The Federation had gone through severe financial problems. IFAP represented over 600 million farm families grouped in 120 national organizations in 79 countries. It was a global network in which farmers from industrialized and developing countries exchanged concerns and set common priorities. IFAP was founded in 1946 to advocate farmers' interests at the international level, and had General Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Paul Smit
Paul Albertus Smit (born 23 March 1953 near Otavi, Otjozondjupa Region) is a Namibian politician and farmer. Education Smit attended Etosha High School in Tsumeb, where he graduated from in 1971. Upon graduation in Tsumeb, he left to South Africa, where he attended the University of the Orange Free State in Bloemfontein. He graduated with a BSc in Agricultural Economy in 1973. Political positions A White farmer, Smit considers himself "apolitical" despite being the Deputy Minister of Agriculture since 2000 in an otherwise SWAPO-led government. Smit has actively worked towards reconciliation between Black and White Namibians through Transformation Namibia. In October 2002, Smit apologized before the National Assembly for the wrongs of apartheid. Otjozondjupa Region
Otjozondjupa is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its capital is Otjiwarongo. The region further contains the municipalities of Okahandja and Grootfontein and the towns Okakarara and Otavi. , Otjozondjupa had 97,945 registered voters. Geography A landmark within this region is the Waterberg Plateau Park. Twenty four kilometres west of Grootfontein lies the huge Hoba meteorite. At over 60 tons, it is the largest known meteorite on Earth, as well as being the largest naturally occurring mass of iron known to exist on the planet's surface. SWAPO
The South West Africa People's Organisation (, SWAPO; af, Suidwes-Afrikaanse Volks Organisasie, SWAVO; german: Südwestafrikanische Volksorganisation, SWAVO), officially known as the SWAPO Party of Namibia, is a political party and former independence movement in Namibia. Founded in 1960, it has been the governing party in Namibia since the country achieved independence in 1990. The party continues to be dominated in number and influence by the Ovambo ethnic group. SWAPO held a two-thirds majority in parliament from 1994 to 2019. Agriculture In Namibia
Agriculture in Namibia contributes around 5% of the national Gross Domestic Product though 25% to 40% of Namibians depend on subsistence agriculture and herding. Primary products included livestock and meat products, crop farming and forestry. Only 2% of Namibia's land receives sufficient rainfall to grow crops. As all inland rivers are ephemeral, irrigation is only possible in the valleys of the border rivers Oranje, Kunene, and Okavango, and also at the Hardap Irrigation Scheme.
