New York State Route 54A (NY 54A) is a state highway in the western part of New York in the United States. It runs in a northeast to southwest direction through part of the Finger Lakes district of New York. The southern terminus of NY 54A is at NY 54 south of Hammondsport. The northern terminus is in Penn Yan, where it rejoins NY 54. Unlike NY 54, which runs along the east side of Keuka Lake, NY 54A has a more circuitous route around the western side of the lake. Route description NY 54A begins at an intersection with NY 54 in the town of Urbana. NY 54A proceeds northward through Urbana as Main Street Extension, crossing Keuka Inlet into the village of Hammondsport. After the inlet, NY 54A changes names to Main Street, crosses over the Bath and Hammondsport Railroad alignment and enters downtown Hammondsport. Pulteney is a town in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 1,260 at the 2020 census. The name is derived from the name of the original pioneer tract of land. The Town of Pulteney is in the northeastern part of the county, northeast of Bath. History The first settlers arrived in this part of the Pulteney Tract in approximately 1797. For a time the area was known as "Harmonyville." However, the actual town was formed in 1808 from the Town of Bath. Part of Pulteney was used to form the Town of Prattsburgh (1813) and part of the Town of Urbana (1848). Hammondsport, New York
Hammondsport is a village at the south end of Keuka Lake, in Steuben County, one of the Finger Lakes of New York, United States. The Village of Hammondsport is in the Town of Urbana and is northeast of Bath. History Lazarus Hammond founded the village around 1827. The village was incorporated in 1856. 1930 State Highway Renumbering (New York)
In January 1930, the U.S. state of New York implemented a major renumbering of its state highways. Many previously existing numbered routes were renumbered or realigned. At the same time, many state highways that were previously unnumbered received designations. Most of the highways with numbers in the 100s to 300s were assigned at this time. Route numbers were assigned in clusters based on their general location. Because some of these route numbers are no longer in use, the pattern of clusters is not fully apparent today. Before 1930, the route numbering system in place had its origins in the 1920s. At the time, New York only assigned numbers to a small subset of its state highways. Route numbers spanned from 1–80, with routes running primarily north–south having even numbers and routes generally running east–west having odd numbers. It travels through three different counties in just and is the primary road to and from the village of Canaseraga.
