Mường Pồn is a commune (''xã'') and village of the Điện Biên District of Điện Biên Province, northwestern Vietnam. In Vietnam, there are three kinds of third-level (commune-level) administrative subdivisions: the Rural commune (Vietnam), rural commune ( vi, xã), the Commune-level town (Vietnam), commune-level town ( vi, thị trấn), and the ward (Vietnam), ward ( vi, phường, literal meaning: urban subdistrict). The Battle of Dien Bien Phu (french: Bataille de Diên Biên Phu ; vi, Chiến dịch Điện Biên Phủ, ) was a climactic confrontation of the First Indochina War that took place between 13 March and 7 May 1954. It was fought between the French Union's colonial French Far East Expeditionary Corps, Far East Expeditionary Corps and Việt Minh, Viet Minh Communism, communist Revolutionary, revolutionaries. Pierre Charles Albert Marie Langlais (2 December 190917 July 1986http://www.dienbienphu.org/english/html/annuaire/langlais.htm) was a senior French military officer who fought in World War II and the First Indochina War. Hailing from the Brittany region of France, Langlais was known as a tough and uncompromising character with an ″unflagging devotion to his men.″ After serving the majority of his career in France's North African colonies before the Second World War, Langlais became best known for his role in the Indochina War where he commanded paratroop forces and became the ''de facto'' commander of the French garrison in the midst of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.
