Māris Krakops
Māris Krakops (born April 3, 1978 in Latvia) is a Latvian chess player who holds the FIDE title of Grandmaster (1998). Māris Krakops started real chess career in 1992 when he participated in Open Junior Championship of USSR in Jūrmala. In 1994 he placed second in the Junior World Championship under 16 in Szeged, Hungary (after Peter Leko). In 1994 he achieved the International Master title. Then, in 1995, Māris Krakops was 8th in the World Junior Chess Championship U-18 in Guarapuava, Brazil and again he placed 8th in the World Junior Chess Championship U-20 in Siófok, Hungary. Māris Krakops won the Latvian Chess Championship in 1998. In 2000 he won Troll Masters in Gausdal, Norway but in 2001 was second in Patras, Greece. Māris Gailis
Māris Gailis (born 9 July 1951) is a Latvian businessman and former politician. He is the former Prime Minister of Latvia, an office he held from September 1994 to December 1995. In the government of the Prime Minister Valdis Birkavs, Gailis became a Minister of State Reform; in the government of the Prime Minister Andris Šķēle, he was the Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development. As a member of the right-wing liberal political party Latvian Way, he was elected in the 5th Saeima and 6th Saeima. He led a round-the-globe expedition on the yacht ''Milda'' from 2001 to 2003. Māris Kučinskis (born 28 November 1961) is a Latvian politician and former Prime Minister of Latvia. Early life and career Māris Kučinskis was born on 28 November 1961, in Limbaži District, Latvia, where he lived until the age of 16. After primary school in the village of Ķirbiži, he moved to the town of Valmiera, where he studied at Valmiera Secondary School No. 4. Māris Verpakovskis
Māris Verpakovskis (born 15 October 1979), is a Latvian retired professional footballer who played as a striker. He represented the Latvia national team at UEFA Euro 2004 and is the only Latvian player to score at the end stage of a major international football tournament. Māris Rūdolfs Liepa (27 July 1936, Riga – 26 March 1989, Moscow) was a Soviet Latvian ballet dancer. He graduated from Riga Choreography School where he was taught by Valentin Blinov (Russian: Валентин Блинов). He performed in Moscow for the first time in 1950. Māris Martinsons (born July 25, 1960) is a Latvian film director, Film producer, producer, screenwriter and film editor. Māris Štrombergs
Māris Štrombergs (born 10 March 1987) is a Latvian former professional BMX racer. In the 2008 Summer Olympics he became the first Olympic champion in BMX cycling. Earlier that year he won the 2008 UCI BMX World Championships. In 2012 he prolonged his Olympic title by winning the gold medal in the London Olympics. Štrombergs was born in Valmiera. His first trainer was Raimonds Ciesnieks. However, the longest collaboration was with Ivo Lakučs. Māris Štrombergs completed the Olympic 2008 BMX in about 36 seconds. Māris Čaklais (16 June 1940 – 13 December 2003) was a Latvian poet, writer, and journalist. Biography Čaklais studied journalism at the University of Latvia until 1964; his first publications appeared in 1960. He translated to Latvian Bertolt Brecht, Paul Celan, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and Rainer Maria Rilke, among others. Māris Jučers (born June 18, 1987) is a Latvian professional ice hockey goaltender who is currently a free agent having last played for HK Liepāja of the Latvian Hockey Higher League.
