Mário Ruivo
Mário João de Oliveira Ruivo GOSE • GOIH • GCM ( Campo Maior, 3 March 1927 – Lisbon, 25 January 2017), known as Mário Ruivo, was a Portuguese scientist and politician, a pioneer in the defense of the ocean and the environment in Portugal. He briefly held ministerial offices in the Portuguese government after the Carnation Revolution, but spend most of his career in senior positions in numerous governmental and non-governmental environmental agencies and scientific organisations. Early life and education In the 1940s, he was a prominent leader of the Direção Universitária de Lisboa and of MUD Juvenil (a youth organization), being arrested for his political activities against the dictatorship in 1947. The Lisbon Geographic Society (Portuguese: ''Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa'') is a Portuguese scientific society created in Lisbon in the year of 1875, aiming to "promote and assist the study and progress of geography and related sciences in Portugal." The University of Algarve (UAlg), founded in 1979, is a Portuguese public higher education institution located in the southernmost region of mainland Portugal, the Algarve, having its headquarters and two out of its three campuses in Faro (namely the Gambelas and Penha) and another campus in Portimão. European Parliament
The European Parliament (EP) is one of the legislative bodies of the European Union and one of its seven institutions. Together with the Council of the European Union (known as the Council and informally as the Council of Ministers), it adopts European legislation, following a proposal by the European Commission. In 2008, the European Parliament introduced the European Citizen's prize. It is intended to reward on an annual basis individuals or groups who have particularly distinguished themselves in strengthening European integration by the expression of European cooperation, openness to others and practical involvement in the development of mutual understanding. It is awarded upon nominations of Members of European Parliament. The Prize ThEuropean Citizen's Prizewas launched by the European Parliament in 2008 to recognise exceptional achievements by Europeans. National Order Of Merit (Malta)
The National Order of Merit is a state order of the Republic of Malta. The order is divided into four grades that may be awarded to Maltese citizens. The grade of Companion of Honour of the National Order of Merit is the highest honour that the government of Malta may confer upon its citizens. Citizens of other countries may be awarded the order on an honorary basis.
