Mànran
Mànran are a Scottish band that was established in June 2010. Mànran is a Gaelic word for a melodic sound or a sweet tone. Since 2010 they have performed in over 30 countries worldwide including several international folk & world music festivals, won awards home and abroad and were invited to do a special one-off concert for the 2012 London Olympics. The band embarked on their first trip to America in 2013 which was filmed by BBC ALBA for a one-hour-long documentary. Career 2011: Breakthrough On 17 January 2011 the band released their first single " Latha Math" and were aiming to be the first Gaelic song in the Top 40 for the 21st Century. While the band reached 29 mid-week, they slipped out of the top 40 to Number 61 for the official chart on Sunday 23 January 2011. Ewen Henderson (musician)
Ewen Henderson (born 1987) gd, Eòghann Mac Eunraig is a multi-instrumentalist folk musician from Fort William in Scotland. Musical career Henderson comes from a musical family, with his sisters Megan (of Breabach) and Ingrid and brother Allan (formerly of Blazin' Fiddles) in particular being musicians of renown. He started learning the fiddle at the age of five under the tutelage of Aonghas Grant Snr. Besides fiddle, Ewen regularly performs on bagpipe, penny whistle and piano. He is also fluent in Scottish Gaelic and sings in the language. He has been a member of Battlefield Band (2010–2014), the Pneumatic Drills and Skipinnish but is currently most often found performing with Mànran, the band he helped found in 2010. His Scottish Gaelic singing has been aired on BBC Alba broadcasts. Since 2015, Ewen has also performed regularly with World music pioneers the Afro Celt Sound System. Gary Innes
Gary Innes (born 13 December 1980) is a Scottish musician, shinty player, composer and a broadcaster from Spean Bridge, Lochaber, Scotland. He was a founder member of Scottish folk-rock band Mànran. Music Innes has had a professional career playing the piano accordion since 2003, and is noted for his distinctive purple accordion. He joined Runrig on stage at their concert ''Beat the Drum'' in Drumnadrochit on 18 August 2007 where he played to an audience of 17,500 and has continued to join the band on Clash of the Ash at many of their open air shows. This included joining Runrig for their farewell concerts at Stirling Castle on 17 and 18 August 2018 to over 50,000 people. "Latha Math" (English: ''Good day'' or ''Greetings'') is a single from the Scottish Gaelic group Mànran. The song was written by Norrie MacIver, who was the band's singer until he left in December 2015. The single was released in the United Kingdom on 17 January 2011 as a digital download. The band were aiming to be the first Gaelic song in the Top 40 for the 21st Century. Craig Irving
Craig Irving is a multi-award-winning Scottish musician from Inverness, Scotland. He was formerly a guitarist and singer with Gaelic folk band Mànran and formerly of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award-winning trio, Talisk. Background Irving began playing the guitar at the age of 15 whilst living in Australia. Upon his return to Scotland, he studied music at Lews Castle College in Benbecula in 2012 and at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow from 2013 to 2016, though was forced to leave before the completion of his studies due to touring commitments with Mànran. Music In August 2014, Irving formed the trio, Talisk, alongside concertina player Mohsen Amini and fiddler Hayley Keenan. A few months later, the group won the 2015 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, and a Celtic Connections Danny Kyle Award. Michelle McManus (born 8 May 1980) is a Scottish singer, columnist, and television presenter who won the second and final series of the UK talent show ''Pop Idol'' in 2003. McManus's debut single, " All This Time", entered the UK Singles Chart at number one in January 2004. Her only album to date, ''The Meaning of Love'', was released in February 2004 and debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart. Later that year, BMG dropped McManus from the label, and in 2007 she founded her own record label, McMannii Records. Folk Music Of Scotland
Scottish folk music (also Scottish traditional music) is a genre of folk music that uses forms that are identified as part of the Scottish musical tradition. There is evidence that there was a flourishing culture of popular music in Scotland during the late Middle Ages, but the only song with a melody to survive from this period is the "Pleugh Song". After the Reformation, the secular popular tradition of music continued, despite attempts by the Kirk, particularly in the Lowlands, to suppress dancing and events like penny weddings. The first clear reference to the use of the Highland bagpipes mentions their use at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547. The Highlands in the early seventeenth century saw the development of piping families including the MacCrimmons, MacArthurs, MacGregors and the Mackays of Gairloch. Celtic Connections
The Celtic Connections festival started in 1994 in Glasgow, Scotland, and has since been held every January. Featuring over 300 concerts, ceilidhs, talks, free events, late night sessions and workshops, the festival focuses on the roots of traditional Scottish music and also features international folk, roots and world music artists. The festival is produced and promoted by Glasgow Life. Donald Shaw, a founding member of Capercaillie, was appointed Celtic Connections Artistic Director in 2006.
