Myrtle McAteer
Myrtle McAteer (June 12, 1878 – October 26, 1952) was an American tennis player around the turn of the 20th century. At the U.S. National Championships (now known as the U.S. Open), McAteer won the singles title in 1900, and doubles titles in 1899 and 1901. She also was a singles finalist in 1901, a doubles finalist in 1900, and a mixed doubles finalist in 1901. She was also the first singles champion of the storied event in Cincinnati. Marion Jones (tennis)
Marion Jones Farquhar (née Jones; November 2, 1879 – March 14, 1965) was an American tennis player. She won the women's singles titles at the 1899 and 1902 U.S. Championships. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006. Biography Jones was the daughter of Nevada Senator John Percival Jones, co-founder of the town of Santa Monica, California, and Georgina Frances Sullivan. Marion Jones was the first Californian to reach the finals at the women's U.S. Tennis Championships in 1898 where she had a championship point against Juliette Atkinson but lost in five sets. She won the U.S. women's tennis title in 1899 and 1902, and the U.S. mixed doubles title in 1901. At the 1900 Summer Olympics, she was the first American woman to win an Olympic medal. Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages.
