Mynydd-y-Garreg
Mynydd-y-Garreg or Mynyddygarreg ("The mountain of the stone") is a village in the county of Carmarthenshire, West Wales. It borders the historic town of Kidwelly. Governance Mynydd-y-Garreg is in the Kidwelly community and shares with it a mayor and an elected council, Kidwelly Town Council. Transport By road, the village lies 1 km from the A484, which connects Llanelli and Carmarthen. For rail travel, Kidwelly railway station lies 4 km (2.5 miles) away by road. It provides a two-hourly daytime service on Mondays to Saturdays. Some trains reach as far as London and Manchester. Bus services through Kidwelly provide links to Llanelli, Carmarthen, Swansea and other places. Amenities The village has a Welsh-medium primary school, Ysgol Mynydd-y-Garreg School. Tom Beynon (Presbyterian Minister)
Tom Beynon (1886 – 10 February 1961) was a Welsh Presbyterian minister, author and historian. Life Tom Beynon was born to William and Elizabeth Beynon and grew up in Mynydd-y-Garreg, Carmarthenshire. After completing local schooling in 1903, he began work in the Pontyberem area, where he attended the local Soar Church and began preaching. Soon after he entered training at the Old College School, Carmarthen, then took further training at Newcastle Emlyn Grammar School and Bala Theological College, and was ordained a pastor of the Tabernacle of Blaengwynfi, Glamorgan, in 1916. He went on to serve at and Gosen near Aberystwyth (1933–1951). Writings Beynon was an enthusiastic historian of Calvinistic Methodism in Wales. His writings appeared in ''Y Drysorfa'', ''Y Goleuad'', ''Y Traethodydd'', and in local papers such as the '' Llanelly Mercury'' and the '' Welsh Gazette''. Kidwelly
Kidwelly ( cy, Cydweli) is a town and community in Carmarthenshire, southwest Wales, approximately northwest of the most populous town in the county, Llanelli. In the 2001 census the community of Kidwelly returned a population of 3,289, increasing to 3,523 at the 2011 Census. It lies on the River Gwendraeth above Carmarthen Bay. The community includes Mynyddgarreg and Llangadog. History The earliest written form of the name, 'Cetgueli', is recorded by the monk, Nennius, writing in the 9th century. One theory is that the name means the land, territory, or kingdom of Cadwal. Another theory is that the name is the combination of the two words ''Cyd'' (joint) and ''Gweli'' (bed), i.e., the joining of the two river beds Gwendraeth Fawr and Gwendraeth Fach, wherein Cydweli lies. Smarts Quarry
Smarts Quarry is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Carmarthenshire, Wales, designated in 1987 for its geological features. SSSI Smarts Quarry SSSI is located approximately east-north-east of Mynydd-y-Garreg, and covers . The SSSI citation for Smart Quarry specifies the importance of "abundant, bivalve produced, stellate feeding traces on a bedding surface" within the Namurian quartzite of the quarry. The citation finds such traces unique within the Namurian basal grits of South Wales and suggestive of an estuarine rather than a shoreline sedimentary deposition of the quarry stone. Ray Gravell
Raymond William Robert Gravell (12 September 1951 – 31 October 2007) was a Welsh rugby union centre who played club rugby for Llanelli RFC. At international level, Gravell earned 23 caps for Wales and was selected for the 1980 British Lions tour to South Africa. In his later career he became a respected broadcaster and occasional actor. Gravell was also a member of the Gorsedd of Bards, an honour bestowed on him for his contribution to the Welsh language. At the Eisteddfodau Gravell was known by his bardic name ''Ray o'r Mynydd'' and was given the ceremonial role of Grand Sword Bearer. Kidwelly Town Council (Welsh: ''Cyngor Tref Cydweli'') is the town council serving the town of Kidwelly and the village of Mynydd-y-Garreg in the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales. Parc Y Scarlets
''Parc y Scarlets'' (, en, Scarlets Park) is a rugby union stadium in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, that opened in November 2008 as the new home of the Scarlets and Llanelli RFC. The ground replaced Stradey Park, the home of Llanelli's rugby teams for almost 130 years. The stadium complex includes facilities for matchday supporters and for non-matchday revenue generation, as well as a training barn and a training pitch with athletics track. Scarlets
The Scarlets () are one of the four professional Welsh rugby union teams and are based in Llanelli, Wales. Their home ground is the Parc y Scarlets stadium. They play in the United Rugby Championship and the European Rugby Champions Cup (which replaced the Heineken Cup from the 2014–15 season). The club was originally named the Llanelli Scarlets but was renamed at the start of the 2008–09 rugby season.
