Myddelton Family
The Myddelton family were substantial landowners and benefactors in and around Denbigh in the north-east of Wales. As landowners and members of parliament, a number of its members were elevated to the baronetcy. For several generations, the family were governors of Denbigh Castle and owned Chirk Castle well into the 20th century. History Richard Myddelton (by 1509–1577/78), the first MP for Denbigh Boroughs, was a son of Fulk Myddelton of Llansannan, himself a younger son of David Myddelton, receiver of Denbigh during the reign of King Edward IV, was for many years governor of Denbigh Castle. His younger brother was Robert Myddelton, also an MP for Denbigh Boroughs. The Myddelton Family coat of arms features their motto, "In veritate triumpho" (I triumph in trouth), and can be found over the entrance to Chirk Castle in North Wales, which had been bought by Sir Thomas Myddelton in 1595 for £5,000. A ''castell'' () is a Human tower (gymnastic formation), human tower built traditionally at festivals in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Balearic islands and the Valencian Community. At these festivals, several ''colles castelleres'' (teams that build towers) attempt to build and dismantle a tower's structure. On 16 November 2010, ''castells'' were declared by UNESCO to be amongst the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Origin Although based on the earlier traditional Muixeranga of Algemesí in Valencia, the tradition of ''castells'' within Catalonia originated in the ''Ball dels Valencians'' (Valencian Dance) in Valls, near the city of Tarragona, first documented in 1712. Robert Myddelton Biddulph (1805–1872)
Robert Myddelton Biddulph (20 June 1805 – 21 March 1872) was a British landowner and Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party. Early life He was the elder son of Robert Myddelton Biddulph (1761–1814) of Burghill by his wife Charlotte Myddelton of Chirk Castle, Denbighshire. He was educated at Eton College. He succeeded his father in 1814 and his mother in 1843, inheriting the Chirk estate. His younger brother was Thomas Myddelton Biddulph (1809–1878), an officer in the British Army and courtier. Career He was Member of Parliament for Denbigh Boroughs from 1830 to 1832 and for Denbighshire from 1832 to 1835 and from 1852 to 1868. Richard Myddelton (1764–1796)
Richard Myddelton ( – 20 December 1796), of Chirk Castle, Denbighshire, was a Welsh politician. Early life Myddelton was the only son of Richard Myddelton of Chirk Castle and Elizabeth ( Rushout) Myddelton (1730–1772). His younger sister, Charlotte Myddelton, married Robert Biddulph, a banker with Cocks Biddulph. Another sister, Maria Myddelton, who married, as his second wife, Hon. Frederick West (a younger son of John West, 2nd Earl De La Warr). Robert Myddelton Biddulph ( Biddulph; March 1761 – 30 August 1814) was a British Member of Parliament (MP). Early life The first son of Penelope ( Dandridge) Biddulph and barrister Michael Biddulph of Ledbury in Herefordshire and Cofton Hall in Worcestershire. His elder sister, Anne Biddulph, was the wife of David Gordon, 14th of Abergeldie. His younger sister, Penelope Biddulph, married Adam Gordon, brother of David Gordon (both sons of Charles Gordon, 12th of Abergeldie). John Myddelton
John Myddelton (1685 – 9 April 1747), of Chirk Castle, Denbighshire, was a Welsh landowner and politician. He was born the younger son of Richard Myddelton of Shrewsbury and inherited his father's estates, including Chirk Castle, when his elder brother Robert died young and unmarried in 1733. He was elected Member of Parliament (MP) of the Parliament of Great Britain for Denbigh Boroughs on 27 April 1733 – 1741 and Denbighshire in 1741 – 23 February 1742. He died in 1747. Robert Myddleton (1678–1733), of Chirk Castle, Denbighshire, was a British lawyer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1722 to 1733. Early life Myddleton was baptized on 14 June 1678, the eldest surviving son of Richard Myddelton of Shrewsbury and Crutched Friars, London. He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford on 14 December 1694 and was admitted at Middle Temple in 1695. In 1700 he succeeded to the estates of his father and in 1702, he was called to the bar. He married Ann Reade, daughter of Sir James Reade, 2nd Baronet, of Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire on 5 May 1720. He succeeded his cousin, Sir William Myddelton, 4th Baronet, to Chirk Castle on 5 January1718. Career Myddleton was Recorder of, Shrewsbury in 1710. Sir Richard Myddelton, 3rd Baronet (23 March 1655 – 29 April 1716), of Chirk Castle, Denbighshire, was a Welsh landowner and Tory politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1685 to 1716. Myddelton was the fourth son of Sir Thomas Myddelton, 1st Baronet of Chirk Castle and his first wife Mary Cholmondley, daughter of Thomas Cholmondley of Vale Royal, Cheshire. He matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford in 1670 and then travelled abroad. He succeeded to the baronetcy of Chirke in the County of Denbigh on the death of his brother Sir Thomas Myddelton, 2nd Baronet in 1684. On 19 April 1686, he married Frances Whitmore widow of William Whitmore of Balmes. She was one of the Hampton Court Beauties and was the daughter of Sir Thomas Whitmore of Bridgnorth and his wife Hon. Frances Brooke. Sir Thomas Myddelton, 2nd Baronet (ca. 1651 – 5 February 1684) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1679 and 1681. Myddelton was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Myddelton, 1st Baronet and his first wife Mary Cholmondley, daughter of Thomas Cholmondley of Vale Royal, Cheshire. He succeeded to the baronetcy of Chirke in the County of Denbigh on the early death of his father in 1664. and inherited Chirk Castle on the death of his grandfather in 1666. Sir Thomas Myddelton, 1st Baronet
Sir Thomas Myddelton, 1st Baronet (2 November 1624 – 13 July 1663) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1646 and 1663. He supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War but later took part in the Cheshire Uprising (1659) in support of the Restoration. Biography Myddelton was the second son of the politician and Parliamentary general Sir Thomas Myddelton and the grandson of Sir Thomas Myddelton who was Lord Mayor of London in 1613.
