''My First Bells'' is a compilation album by the American punk rock band Minutemen, released on SST Records in 1985. The collection was released as a cassette and included the Minutemen's first five EPs and LPs, recorded and released between 1980 and 1983. It also included three songs released on other compilations: "9:30 May 2", "Clocks" and "Prelude". The release totaled 62 songs. Paranoid Time
''Paranoid Time'' is the first EP by American hardcore punk band Minutemen. It is also the second ever release by the SST record label, founded by Black Flag's Greg Ginn and Chuck Dukowski. The album cover is a drawing by the American artist Raymond Pettibon. Background Minutemen's first record occurred almost immediately after they opened for Black Flag in Minutemen's hometown of San Pedro, California. Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn offered the group a chance to record and release a record, and a late night session at Media Art Studio in Hermosa Beach, California was booked. Recording The group recorded all seven songs in the order in which they appear on the record, with no overdubbing except for backing vocals by the group and drummer George Hurley's brother Greg. Minutemen (band) Albums
Minutemen were members of the organized New England colonial militia companies trained in weaponry, tactics, and military strategies during the American Revolutionary War. They were known for being ready at a minute's notice, hence the name. Minutemen provided a highly mobile, rapidly deployed force that enabled the colonies to respond immediately to military threats. They were an evolution from the prior colonial rapid-response units. The minutemen were among the first to fight in the American Revolution. Their teams constituted about a quarter of the entire militia. They were generally younger, more mobile, and provided with weapons and arms by the local governments. ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. ''Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat'' is the sixth overall release (fourth extended play, or EP, release and their first 12-inch EP) from American hardcore punk band Minutemen. It was released by SST Records in 1983. It is noted for featuring tracks with greater depth and more conventional song structure than on the band's previous releases. Background The EP was recorded rather cheaply even by Minutemen standards; the cost was $50. Most of the songs were cut live to two-track tape at Total Access Studio in Redondo Beach, CA, as opposed to using a multi-track tape recorder, with longtime SST Records staff producer Spot behind the mixing board. Spot had suggested the live-to-two-track approach after Minutemen queried about the possibility of recording a new EP on four-channel multi-track tape, rather than the 16-track recordings the band had done in the past. ''What Makes a Man Start Fires?'' is the second full-length album and fifth release overall by American punk rock band Minutemen. Background At almost twice the length of their previous album, ''The Punch Line'', the Minutemen's songs began surpassing the two-minute mark. Breaking another Minutemen record, the band took the longest time they took to date to record ''What Makes A Man Start Fires?''. The basic tracks were recorded in one late-night session, but then the band held two separate late-night sessions for guitar and vocal overdubs. Watt has said that he considers this to be Minutemen's "first real album." While the songwriting credits are shared among all three Minutemen, all of the music for the album was composed exclusively by bassist Mike Watt; the bass-centered origins of the songs is especially apparent on such tracks as "Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs", "Sell Or Be Sold", and "The Anchor". Marc Bolan
Marc Bolan ( ; born Mark Feld; 30 September 1947 – 16 September 1977) was an English guitarist, singer and songwriter. He was a pioneer of the glam rock movement in the early 1970s with his band T. Rex. Bolan was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of T. Rex. In the late 1960s, he rose to fame as the founder and leader of the psychedelic folk band Tyrannosaurus Rex, with whom he released four critically acclaimed albums and had one minor hit "Debora". Bolan had started as an acoustic singer-writer before heading into electric music prior to the recording of T. Rex's first single " Ride a White Swan" which went to number two in the UK singles chart. Bolan's March 1971 appearance on the BBC's music show ''Top of the Pops'', wearing glitter on his face, performing the UK chart topper " Hot Love" is cited as the beginning of the glam rock movement. ''Bean-Spill'' is the third extended-play single and fourth release overall by American hardcore punk band Minutemen. Background The Minutemen's second LP, '' What Makes a Man Start Fires?'', was recorded in the summer of 1982 but the release was delayed due to SST's lawsuit with Unicorn Records. To fill the lengthy gap between releases, SST Records partner Joe Carducci volunteered to release an EP on his Thermidor Records label. Recorded in two sessions with side A recorded at Media Art in Hermosa Beach with Spot and side B recorded in November 1981 at Casbah Studio in Fullerton, CA. The latter session also saw the recording of what became the first seven tracks of ''The Politics of Time''. The EP includes two of the band's most enduring early numbers, "Split Red" and "If Reagan Played Disco." The Punch Line
''The Punch Line'' is the first 12-inch studio album and third overall release by American punk rock band Minutemen, and the fourth-ever release from SST Records. After their previous release, '' Paranoid Time'', sold out its 300-copy pressing, Greg Ginn invited the band to record another album. Less than half the length of most LPs, the total playing time for all 18 songs is a mere 15 minutes. The album was an early milestone release for the band and SST. ''The Punch Line'' hit record store shelves three months after the release of ''Joy'' although ''Joy'' was recorded after ''The Punch Line''. ''Joy'' is the second Extended play, EP by American hardcore punk band Minutemen (band), Minutemen. Recorded not long after the release of their first EP ''Paranoid Time'', it is also the first release on Minutemen's own label New Alliance Records. Their first studio album ''The Punch Line'' was released three months after ''Joy'', but ''Joy'' was recorded after ''The Punch Line''. The EP also appears as part of the ''My First Bells'' compact audio cassette, cassette and the ''Post-Mersh Vol. 3'' CD, both on SST Records. SST reissued the EP in 1987 not long after buying New Alliance Records from Mike Watt. When SST took over the New Alliance label and back catalogue, the label redated the copyright on the EP to be 1987, causing some fans to believe that the EP contained previously unreleased material.
