Mutter Courage Und Ihre Kinder (film)
''Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder'' (''Mother Courage and Her Children'') is a DEFA film which documents the staging of Bertold Brecht's play of the same name from 1959 to 1961, which Manfred Wekwerth and Peter Palitzsch directed with the Berliner Ensemble, modelled after the original production by Bertolt Brecht and Erich Engel from 1949, with Helene Weigel in the title role. The film, made in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), received a prize at the Locarno Film Festival. History Bertold Brecht had directed his play '' Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder'' with the Berliner Ensemble, together with Erich Engel, in 1949. Manfred Wekwerth worked as his assistant for the production from 1951. After Brecht's death, the film ''Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder'' intended to be a faithful rendering of this model production on stage. Kunsthaus Tacheles
The Kunsthaus Tacheles (English: ''Art House Tacheles'') was an art center in Berlin, Germany, a large () building and sculpture park on Oranienburger Straße, in the sub-neighborhood of Spandauer Vorstadt in the Mitte district. Huge, colorful graffiti-style murals were painted on the exterior walls, and modern art sculptures were featured inside. The building housed an artist collective from 1990 until 2012. Originally called Friedrichstraßenpassage, it was built in 1907–1908 as a department store in the Jewish quarter (Scheunenviertel) of Berlin, next to the synagogue. During World War II it served as a Nazi prison for a short while. Under GDR authorities it was later partially demolished. After the Berlin Wall had come down in 1989, it was taken over by artists, who called it ''Tacheles'', Yiddish for "straight talking". Wolf Kaiser
Wolf Kaiser (26 October 1916 – 22 October 1992) was a German theatre and film actor. He grew up in Switzerland, where he studied chemistry and physiology. In 1937 he was deemed unfit for service in the Wehrmacht, and then went to Berlin where he trained as an actor. Career Kaiser made his stage début in 1941 at the Stadtheater in Jihlava, Czechoslovakia, when that country was occupied by Germany. This led to Kaiser's engagement at the Volksbühne in Berlin from 1942 until 1945. Kaiser then had engagements in Frankfurt am Main, Munich and the Schauspiel Leipzig. In 1950 Kaiser returned to Berlin, where Bertolt Brecht recruited him to the Deutsches Theater and the Berliner Ensemble. Kaiser starred as Mack the Knife in Brecht and Weill's ''The Threepenny Opera'' in more than 450 times. Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Busch (22 January 1900 – 8 June 1980) was a German singer and actor. Biography Busch originated from a Kiel worker family. He started in life as a shipyard worker before he decided to make use of his acting and singing talent. Busch first rose to prominence as an interpreter of political songs, particularly those of Kurt Tucholsky, in the Berlin Kabarett scene of the 1920s. He starred in the original 1928 production of Bertolt Brecht's ''Threepenny Opera'', as well as the subsequent 1931 film by Georg Wilhelm Pabst. He also appeared in the movie ''Kuhle Wampe''. Heinz Schubert (12 November 1925 – 12 February 1999) was a German actor, drama teacher and photographer, best known for playing the role of Alfred Tetzlaff in the German television sitcom '' Ein Herz und eine Seele''. Life Schubert was born in Berlin, the son of a master tailor. He went to drama school after his release from captivity as a prisoner of war. In 1951, Bertolt Brecht asked for him directly to join his ''Berliner Ensemble'', where Schubert remained until the Berlin Wall was erected in 1961. Ekkehard Schall
Ekkehard Schall (29 May 1930 in Magdeburg – 3 September 2005 in Berlin) was a German stage and screen actor/director. He was one of the best-known interpreters of Brecht's works and together with Helene Weigel a member of the Berliner Ensemble. Life Schall's first went on stage in 1947 in Magdeburg. After engagements in Frankfurt (Oder) ( Stadttheater Frankfurt (Oder)) and on the Neuen Bühne in Berlin, Bertolt Brecht hired him in 1952 as part of the Berliner Ensemble. Schall played here till 1995, for 14 years as intendant. He played more than 60 roles, for example, ''Ui'' in Brecht's ''Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui'' more than 500 times.
