Musselkanaal
Musselkanaal (also: ''Stads-Musselkanaal''; Gronings: ''Muzzelknoal'') is a town in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Groningen (province), Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Stadskanaal. It was established by the Groningen, city of Groningen in the 1840s to exploit the peat. It used to be part of the municipality of Onstwedde, but was merged into Stadskanaal in 1968. History The Bourtange moor was located in the south-east of Groningen. It was a raised bog with few inhabitants. Around 1600, corporations started to exploit the peat. In 1635, the Groningen, city of Groningen took control, and established the , as a colony. The colony had advanced to Stadskanaal where it ended due to a border conflict with the province of Drenthe. In 1615, the border had been defined by the Semslinie, and the village and monastery of Ter Apel was assigned to Drenthe. Stadskanaal
Stadskanaal () is a town and municipality with a population of 32,715 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. It was named after the canal Stadskanaal. From 1800 until 1900 this area was ideal for its peat mining, and so the canal came to ship all the peat to Groningen, the capital of the province. In the Gronings dialect the town is called "Knoal" and the locals are called "Knoalsters". Semslinie
The Semslinie is a part of the border between the Dutch provinces of Groningen and Drenthe that runs right through the former Bourtanger Moor. The almost straight line runs from Wolfsbarge to the Huis ter Haar at Musselkanaal. The border is slightly bent at Stadskanaal. The slightly bent line between Musselkanaal and Stadskanaal is sometimes called ''Koningsraai''. The Semslinie is named after Johan Sems. History On August 3, 1614, the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe asked Johan Sems (asked by Groningen) and Johan de la Haye (asked by Drenthe) to determine the border between the two provinces. Determining the exact border was necessary because both provinces wanted to get peat from the bog ( Bourtanger Moor) between them. Before the 17th century, there was no large-scale peat harvesting and the provinces never bothered about the exact location of the border. Sienie Strikwerda
Geesiena Jacoba "Sienie" Strikwerda (née van Klinken; 7 November 1921 – 23 June 2013) was a Dutch educator, feminist, and anti–nuclear weapons activist. She served as chairperson of the , the national committee against nuclear cruise missiles. On 29 October 1983, the committee organised a demonstration of 550,000 people which was the largest demonstration in the history of the Netherlands. A steam locomotive is a locomotive that provides the force to move itself and other vehicles by means of the expansion of steam. Veendam () is a town and municipality with a population of 27,752 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Veendam was established in 1648 as a peat colony by Adriaan Geerts Wildervanck. A Holland America Line cruise ship, the MS ''Veendam'', is named after the city. Zandberg, Groningen-Drenthe
Zandberg is a village in the north of the Netherlands, partly located in the Groningen municipality of Westerwolde and partly in the Drenthe municipality of Borger-Odoorn. The village was created in the early nineteenth century as a settlement in the peat colonies. The first residents came from the neighboring part of Germany. Zandberg is therefore one of the Catholic enclaves in the Northern Netherlands. Zandberg owes its name to the sand head, also known as the Schaapsberg, in the green grounds along the stream that was called upstream from Zandberg Valtherdiep and downstream Mussel-Aa. This hill was used to feed sheep and there were possibly huts for the herdsmen of cattle. It was on the border between the Marks Onstwedde and Valthe and was disputed by both. Linear Settlement
A linear settlement is a (normally small to medium-sized) settlement or group of buildings that is formed in a long line. Many of these settlements are formed along a transport route, such as a road, river, or canal. Others form due to physical restrictions, such as coastlines, mountains, hills or valleys. Linear settlements may have no obvious centre. In the case of settlements built along a route, the route predated the settlement, and then the settlement grew along the transport route. Ter Apel (; Gronings: ''Troapel'') is a village with a population of 8,866 residents in the municipality Westerwolde in the northern Netherlands, in the province Groningen in the region Westerwolde.
