Music Of The Americas (concert Series)
The Music of the Americas concert series has been presented by Americas Society since 1965 and seeks to showcase a wide range of artists and music from across the western hemisphere. In 2009, the series was renamed the MetLife Foundation Music of the Americas concert series. The music ranges from classical and folk to popular and contemporary in an effort to highlight the diversity of musical activity in the Americas. Since its inception in 1965, the Music of the Americas concert series has presented a wide range of internationally renowned artists, including Plácido Domingo, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Nelson Freire, Inti-Illimani, and Chango Spasiuk, as well as music not often presented elsewhere in the area. The Music of the Americas program has been under the direction of Sebastián Zubieta since 2005. Americas Society
The Americas Society is an organization dedicated to education, debate, and dialogue on the Americas. It is located at 680 Park Avenue on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and was established by David Rockefeller in 1965. The Americas Society promotes the understanding of the economic, political, and social issues confronting Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada; its mission is "to increase public awareness and appreciation of the diverse cultural heritage of the Americas and the importance of the inter-American relationship." The Americas Society Building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The building was previously the Percy Rivington Pyne House before serving as the Soviet Mission to the United Nations until its current usage. The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute is an organization in New York City, founded to promote the Spanish language and the culture of Spain and the Americas. Its office is located at 575 Madison Avenue, following the sale of the 684 Park Avenue location in 2016. History On May 18, 1954, the institute was incorporated as a non-political, non-profit organization under the laws of the State of New York. Its mission is to stimulate interest in the culture, history and customs of Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries in the United States, and vice versa. In 1965, the Marquesa de Cuevas, the philanthropist Margaret Rockefeller Strong, saved the landmark building 684 Park Avenue from destruction. Percy Rivington Pyne II (May 5, 1857 – August 22, 1929) was a banker, financier, and philanthropist. Early life Pyne was born on May 5, 1857, in Manhattan, New York City, the son of Percy Rivington Pyne I (1820-1895) and Albertina Shelton (née Taylor) Pyne (1833–1900). His maternal grandfather was Moses Taylor, founder of the First National City Bank of New York and a stockholder in the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. His older brother, Moses Taylor Pyne, inherited much of the family fortune and was a major benefactor of Princeton University. Horacio ''"Chango"'' Spasiuk (born September 23, 1968 in Apóstoles, Misiones) is an Argentine chamamé musician and accordion player. Of Ukrainian grandparents, ''El Chango'' had a strong Polka music influence from his early days; Eastern European musical influences were also already present in the chamamé music of the region. He had his first accordion at age 12, which he played at parties, weddings and other events with his father and uncle. Early years A musical-talent TV show that travelled around small towns opened the door for Spasiuk to perform at provincial festivals. Percy Rivington Pyne House
The Percy R. Pyne House (also known as the Percy Rivington Pyne House and Percy & Maud H. Pyne House) is a neo- Federal townhouse at 680 Park Avenue, located at the corner of Park Avenue and 68th Street in Manhattan. Today the Americas Society uses the building as its New York City headquarters. History Designed by McKim, Mead & White for Percy Rivington Pyne II, grandson of the noted financier Moses Taylor, it was built from 1909 to 1911. Its materials and scale established a character that was followed by the architects of all the subsequent houses on this Park Avenue blockfront. The building was occupied by the Soviet Mission to the United Nations from 1948 to 1963. The generous actions of the Margaret Rockefeller Strong de Larraín, Marquesa de Cuevas, in acquiring the property in 1965 and presenting it to the Americas Society, saved the building from destruction. Inti-Illimani
Inti-Illimani (; from Quechuan ''Inti'' and Aymara ''Illimani)'' are an instrumental and vocal Latin American folk music ensemble from Chile. The band was formed in 1967 by a group of university students and it acquired widespread popularity in Chile for their song '' Venceremos'' (We shall win!), which became the anthem of the Popular Unity government of Salvador Allende. At the moment of the 11 September, 1973 Chilean coup they were on tour in Europe and were unable to return to their country where their music was proscribed by the ruling military junta of Augusto Pinochet. In Europe their music took on a multifarious character, incorporating elements of European baroque and other traditional music forms to their rich and colourful Latin American rhythms, so creating a distinctive fusion of modern world music. Nelson José Pinto Freire (; 18 October 19441 November 2021) was a Brazilian classical pianist. Regarded as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, he was noted for his "decorous piano playing" and "interpretive depth". His extensive discography for labels such as Sony Classical, Teldec, Philips, and Decca has garnered awards including the Gramophone Award and Diapason d'Or.
