Music and Video Club or MVC was a British entertainment retailer which sold DVDs, VHS, audio cassettes, video games, and CDs of popular and specialist titles. At its peak, the company operated 82 stores in the United Kingdom, and also sold products over the internet. The company closed in January 2006, after entering into administration. History MVC was founded by former Our Price directors, who left after W H Smith bought the company. It was bought by Kingfisher plc in 1993, which later spun it off as part of the Woolworths chain in July 2005. In August 2005, MVC was sold to venture capital company Argyle Partners for £5.5 million. In December 2005, however, it entered administration with Kroll. In January 2006, 41 MVC stores were bought by competitor Music Zone. Fopp is a British chain of retail shops selling music, film, books and other entertainment products in the United Kingdom. It is owned by HMV. History Origins The company was setup by Englishman Gordon Montgomery and began as a one-man stall in Glasgow, Scotland in 1981. The name "Fopp" comes from the title of a song by the Ohio Players on their 1975 album ''Honey''. By 2007, Fopp had expanded to become a chain of over 100 branches in the UK. With the demise of rival chain Music Zone, Fopp became the third largest specialist music retailer in the UK in terms of shop numbers (after HMV and Virgin Megastores). Music Zone was a music retailer in the United Kingdom, formed in Levenshulme in 1984, as a market stall in Longsight, Manchester. History Soon after, Music Zone opened its first permanent shop in Stockport, and began to expand in the Manchester region, rebranding itself to Music Zone Trade Direct and positioning itself as a value retailer. In February 2005, Music Zone was sold in a management buy-out for £12 million, backed financially by the private equity firm Lloyds Development Capital (LDC), as well as funds from the board of directors.
