Music Copyright Society Of China
The Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC) (中国音乐著作权协会) is the country's only officially recognized organization for music copyright administration and has issued copyrights for over 14 million music works for approximately 8,000 members. Founded in 1992, the Music Copyright Society of China is the only collective rights management organization for copyright in China, with ties to over 30 foreign music copyright protection organizations including the Irish Music Rights Organisation, the National Music Publishers' Association in the United States, and PRS for Music in England. Irish Music Rights Organisation
The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) is a national organisation that administers the performing right in copyright music in Ireland on behalf of its members (who are songwriters, composers and music publishers) and on behalf of the songwriters, composers and music publishers of the international overseas societies that are affiliated to it. At present IMRO has approximately 11,000 songwriter, composer and music publisher members. PRS For Music
PRS for Music Limited (formerly The MCPS-PRS Alliance Limited) is a British music copyright collective, made up of two collection societies: the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) and the Performing Right Society (PRS). It undertakes collective rights management for musical works on behalf of its 160,000 members. PRS for Music was formed in 1997 following the MCPS-PRS Alliance. Intellectual property rights (IPRs) have been acknowledged and protected in China since the 1980s. China has acceded to the major international conventions on protection of rights to intellectual property. Music Copyright Infringement In The People's Republic Of China
Today music copyright is enforced in China. According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry 97% Chinese consumers were listening to licensed music in 2021. In 2018 the rate was 96% of Chinese, which was a much higher amount than the global average of 62%. Back in 2008 rates of music copyright infringement in China was widely regarded as among the highest in the world. Some reports from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry said, that about 95 percent or higher of music sales in China were unauthorized, most coming from downloads of copyrighted music on the Internet. Some record stores sold unauthorized copies of artists’ music for as little as $4. This had been hard on international and Chinese record industries such as the Music Copyright Society of China, with revenues dropping 90 percent and new release sales falling about 50 percent since 2005.
