Murri Rugby League Team
The Murri Rugby League Team is a representative side for Indigenous rugby league players that play in the annual Queensland Murri Rugby League Carnival. History Arthur Beetson Foundation Murri tour of Hawaii Queensland Murri's faced the USA Tomahawks at Honolulu in 2012, The game was played at Kaiser Stadium with a high school gridiron game played as curtain raiser. The Murri side was selected from the Murri Carnival in Ipswich 2012 with a few of the players were Queensland Cup players likes of Brendon Marshall, Donald Malone, Ian Lacey, Keiron Lander & Kurtis Lingwoodock the side was coached by NRL star, Cory Paterson . They traveled with members of the Jaran Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance Company in a unique exchange between the three cultures in rugby league and culture. Indigenous Australian Sport
Indigenous Australian sport was discouraged by the British colonisers, and Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islander people have faced discrimination when participating in mainstream Australian sports. Sports such as cricket, rugby, netball, soccer and field hockey were introduced into Indigenous communities so they could socialise with and assimilate into white Australian culture. Participation with European Australians The British discouraged Indigenous Australians from continuing their existing sporting traditions. NSW Koori Knockout
NSW Koori Rugby League Knockout Carnival is one of the biggest Indigenous gatherings in Australia. The first knockout was held at Camdenville Park, St Peters, on the October long weekend of 1971 with seven participating teams. The winning team gains the right to host the next knockout. Organisers created the knockout to provide further access for Indigenous players to state rugby league. The knockout celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. History Concept The Knockout emerged from the new and growing mostly inner-city Sydney Aboriginal community in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Torres Strait Islanders () are the Indigenous Melanesian people of the Torres Strait Islands, which are part of the state of Queensland, Australia. The Fiji national rugby league team, nicknamed the Bati (pronounced ), has been participating in international rugby league football since 1992. The team is controlled by the governing body for rugby league in Fiji, Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL), which is currently a member of the Asia-Pacific Rugby League Confederation (APRLC). Fiji have thrice reached the semi-finals of the Rugby League World Cup, in 2008, 2013 and 2017, and are currently ranked 6th in the International Rugby League's World Rankings. New Zealand Māori rugby league team is a rugby league representative side made up of New Zealand Māori players. The side represents the New Zealand Māori Rugby league. Like its union counterpart, the rugby league team previously competed in international competitions. With some controversy, the team participated in the 2000 World Cup as Aotearoa Māori. The Super League International Board had agreed to give a place in their World Cup to the New Zealand Māori team as they attempted to gain allies during the Super League war. Despite that World Cup not taking place, the Rugby League International Federation repeated the offer for the 2000 World Cup when it replaced the Super League International Board following the end of the dispute. The United States national rugby league team represents the United States in international rugby league football competitions. The team is managed by the USA Rugby League (USARL). The United States competed with little success in some international games during the 1950s, but did not return to consistent competition until 1987. Cory Paterson (born 14 July 1987) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who plays as a forward. He previously played for the Newcastle Knights, North Queensland Cowboys and the Wests Tigers in the NRL and Hull Kingston Rovers, Leigh Centurions and the Salford Red Devils in the Super League. He played for the Toronto Wolfpack and Leigh in the Betfred Championship. He is also a professional boxer. Background Paterson was born in Perth, Western Australia.
