''The Murray Valley Standard'' is a bi-weekly newspaper published in Murray Bridge, South Australia, founded in late 1934 and published continuously since then. Its main office is on Adelaide Road, Murray Bridge. It was later sold to Rural Press, previously owned by Fairfax Media, but now an Australian media company trading as Australian Community Media. History Murray Bridge's oldest locally produced newspaper, ''The'' ''Murray Valley Standard'', was first published in Murray Bridge on 23 November 1934. Its main rival at the time was the ''Murray Bridge Advertiser'' (a sub-publication of the '' Mount Barker Courier''), which soon sold its local rights to Maurice Parish. From 21 December 1934, the subtitle changed to "''With which is incorporated 'The Murray Bridge advertiser' and 'The Mannum mercury'''. Murray Bridge (formerly Mobilong and Edwards Crossing) is a city in the Australian state of South Australia, located east-southeast of the state's capital city, Adelaide, and north of the town of Meningie. The city had an urban population of approximately 18,779 as at June 2018, Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. making it the fifth most populous city in the state after Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Gawler and Whyalla. The city is called ''Pomberuk'' by the traditional owners of the land, the Ngarrindjeri people. It was later known as ''Mobilong'' and later as ''Edwards Crossing'', before being renamed as ''Murray Bridge'' in 1924, deriving its name from the then Murray River road/rail bridge crossing over the Murray River. ''The Courier'' is a weekly newspaper published in Mount Barker, South Australia. For much of its existence its full title was ''The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser'', later shortened to ''The Mount Barker Courier''. History The newspaper was founded as ''The Mount Barker Courier and Onkaparinga and Gumeracha Advertiser'' on 1 October 1880, price 3d. (3 pence) for 4 pages. Charles Dumas (newspaperman), Charles M. R. Dumas was sole proprietor, and its offices were on Gawler Street, Mount Barker. Publication continued every Friday morning. In 1893 tentative moves were made to introduce an alternative title ''Mount Barker Courier and Southern Advertiser'', but somehow the "less cumbrous title" never made it to the front page. Maurice Parish
Maurice William Parish (29 December 1890 – 17 January 1980) was an Australian politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly multi-member seat of Murray from 1915 to 1918. He was elected at as a United Labor Party member, left the party to join the National Party in the 1917 Labor split, and became an independent in 1918. Parish was born in Melbourne, with his family moving to Murray Bridge at the age of four. He was a building contractor before entering politics, and was elected as a District Council of Mobilong councillor in 1914. He was subsequently chairman of the Mobilong council from 1915 until 1924, and then the first mayor of the Corporate Town of Murray Bridge from 1924 until 1927, later returning as mayor in the 1930s. He was elected to the House of Assembly at the 1915 state election for the United Labor Party in the seat of Murray. Meningie, South Australia
Meningie is a town on the south-east side of Lake Albert in South Australia. It is on the Princes Highway near The Coorong and was surveyed in 1866. At the , the locality of Meningie had a population of 1118 with a median age of 51 while its town centre had a population of 852. History The word ''Meningie'' is derived from "the Aboriginal word 'meningeng' meaning 'place of mud'". The town was surveyed between March and June 1866 by W. Farquhar without any proclamation. Land was offered for sale on 23 August 1866. The name also was used for an "adjoining private subdivision of sections 104, 106/9 and 111" in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Bonney.
