Murray D. Smith is a businessman and former provincial-level politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1993 until 2004 sitting with the governing Progressive Conservative caucus. During his time in office he served as a cabinet minister under the government of Ralph Klein serving various cabinet portfolios from 1994 to 2004. William Murray Smith (23 October 1930 – 1 October 2010) was a Progressive Conservative party member of the House of Commons of Canada. Murray Smith is a former New Zealand politician. He was a member of the United Future New Zealand party caucus, having been elected to Parliament as a list MP in the 2002 election. Political career Before entering national politics, Smith was a lawyer. He was a founding member of the Christian Democrats, which later became Future New Zealand. Future New Zealand then joined with United New Zealand to form the modern United Future New Zealand. For the , the Christian Democrats formed a coalition with Christian Heritage New Zealand, and he was ranked 13th on the party list of the resulting Christian Coalition, but he did not contest an electorate. Murray Smith (14 June 1940 – 28 December 2003) was a British television writer and producer. He was associated with many British films and TV shows, including the ITV (TV network), ITV series ''The XYY Man'', ''Strangers (1978 TV series), Strangers'' and ''Bulman'', all featuring actor Don Henderson in the role of George Bulman (fictional character), George Bulman. Smith also wrote scripts for such series as ''The Sweeney'', ''Minder (TV series), Minder'', and ''Dempsey and Makepeace'', and also wrote several novels. Murray Robert Smith (6 June 1941 – 27 September 2009) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Biography Smith was born in Hamilton in 1941. He became a civil servant and later a member of the Whangarei Adult Education Committee. He joined the Labour Party and was secretary of both the Marsden and Hamilton Labour Representation Committees. He unsuccessfully contested Piako in 1966 finishing third and Marsden in 1969 finishing second. He was elected for the Whangarei electorate with the swing to Labour in the 1972 general election but was defeated in the next election in 1975. In early 1977 he contemplated standing as a candidate for the Labour Party nomination in the Mangere by-election, however he ultimately decided to withdraw from the candidacy race. Robert Murray Smith, usually known as Murray Smith, CMG MA (29 October 1831 – 31 August 1921), was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly and Agent-General for Victoria (Australia). Early life Smith was the son of Alexander Smith, of Liverpool, England, and his wife Sophia Sherbourne, daughter of Admiral Robert Murray. R. M. Smith was educated at Repton School and at Oriel College, Oxford, of which he became scholar, but did not continue his university course, owing to family reasons rendering it desirable for him to go into commerce. In 1883, however, the University conferred on him the honorary degree of M.A. Career in Australia 1854–1882 Smith emigrated to Victoria in 1854, and married Jane, daughter of the late Hon. Joanna Murray-Smith (born 17 April 1962) is a Melbourne-based Australian playwright, screenwriter, novelist, librettist and newspaper columnist. Life and career Murray-Smith was born in Mount Eliza, Victoria; her father was the literary editor and academic Stephen Murray-Smith (1922–1988). Her uncle was the actor John Bluthal. She attended Toorak College and graduated with a BA (Hons) from the University of Melbourne. On a Rotary International Scholarship in 1995, Murray-Smith attended the writing program at Columbia University, New York. In 2003, she took a sabbatical in Italy. She is married to Raymond Gill and has two sons and one daughter.
