Will Johnson (musician)
Will Johnson (born March 23, 1971) is an American musician, singer-songwriter, author and painter who is the lead singer of the bands Centro-matic and South San Gabriel. Called "one of the most prolific artists in American indie rock", Johnson has also released solo records, and is a member of the bands Monsters of Folk, New Multitudes and Overseas, and has also performed as part of the Undertow Orchestra. Early life Johnson was born in Kennett, Missouri. When he was 11 years old, his mother remarried and the family moved to Killeen, Texas. Johnson attended the University of North Texas, where he was involved in Denton's active music scene. He double-majored in English and elementary education. Music career Early music Johnson began playing drums, piano and sang in his church choir at an early age. South San Gabriel (band)
South San Gabriel is an alternative country band (music), band based in Denton, Texas. History The band is named after the San Gabriel river fork north of Austin, Texas. The group consists of the same players from Centro-matic with the inclusion of guests, but focuses on more introspective and subdued offerings from their repertoire. Lead singer Will Johnson (musician), Will Johnson, has alternated between the two projects, while also releasing solo albums. The first South San Gabriel album, ''South San Gabriel Songs/Music, Songs/Music'', was credited to Centro-Matic on its US release (it was credited to South San Gabriel on the Netherlands release on Munich Records). Undertow Music
Undertow began in 1996 in St. Louis, Missouri, as a collective of independent artists, musicians, filmmakers, designers and creative managers sharing resources, ideas, and a love of music. Undertow Music is currently located in Champaign, Illinois. Record label Undertow Records was started in 1996 by Mark Ray when he released albums by his band, Waterloo, and a band they shared a studio space with, Nadine. Undertow serves as a conduit for artists to release their albums to a wider audience through digital, retail, and direct sales outlets. The artists retain ownership and control of their music at all times. No formal contracts are drawn up between artists and Undertow.
