"Murder Rap" is a song by American gangsta rap group Above the Law, released as a single on February 8, 1990. It was written by Cold 187um, Dr. Dre, Go Mack, Laylaw and Total Kaos. Music and lyrics The music of "Murder Rap", as produced by Dr. Dre, consists of an ominous siren sound, and backwards, looped drum beats. Allmusic's Alex Henderson says that the song's lyrics "let listeners know exactly what life in South Central was like." Reception In his Allmusic review, Alex Henderson wrote that "The imaginative Dre's input as a producer is consistently beneficial", saying that the music "comes alive" as a result of Dr. Dre's input. Regarding Above the Law's lyrical content, Henderson wrote, "the Angelenos had some freshness." A review of the song by Frank Owen in '' Spin'' praised Dr. Dre's production, saying that the producer "has a remarkable talent for making noise funky, and he shows it to great effect". Above the Law was an American Hip hop music, hip hop group from Pomona, California, founded in 1989 by Cold 187um, KMG the Illustrator, Go Mack, and DJ Total K-Oss. Biography In 1989, the group signed with Eazy-E's Ruthless Records, while there, the group became an additional influence in pioneering with the group, N.W.A. Their first album on Ruthless, 1990's ''Livin' Like Hustlers'', featured a guest appearance from N.W.A and production from Dr. Dre. Above the Law member Cold187um worked closely with Dre on production and the two had great influence on each other. The songs "Untouchable" and "Murder Rap" became minor hits from the album. "Murder Rap" appeared in the 2008 film ''Pineapple Express (film), Pineapple Express''. G-funk Songs
G-funk, short for gangsta funk, is a sub-genre of gangsta rap that emerged from the West Coast scene in the late 1980s. The genre is heavily influenced by 1970s psychedelic funk (P-funk) sound of artists such as Parliament-Funkadelic. Characteristics G-funk (which uses funk with an artificially altered tempo) incorporates multi-layered and melodic synthesizers, slow hypnotic grooves, a deep bass, heavy use of the snare drum, background female vocals, the extensive sampling of P-Funk tunes, and a high-pitched portamento saw wave synthesizer lead. It is typically set at a tempo of anywhere between 80 to 100 BPM. The lyrical content depended on the artist and could consist of sex, drug use (especially marijuana), love for a city/neighborhood, love for friends and relaxing words. Shangri-La is a fictional place in the Kunlun Mountains (崑崙山) described in the 1933 novel ''Lost Horizon'' by English author James Hilton. Hilton describes Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia – an enduringly happy land, isolated from the world.
