The Municipality of Two Borders is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It is located in the extreme south-west corner of the province in the Westman Region. The rural municipality's name is a reference to its location abutting Manitoba's western border with the province of Saskatchewan and Manitoba's southern international border with the American state of North Dakota. The Town of Melita is located within the municipality, but is a separate urban municipality. History The municipality was created on January 1, 2015 via the amalgamation of the RMs of Albert, Arthur and Edward. It was formed as a requirement of ''The Municipal Amalgamations Act'', which required that municipalities with a population less than 1,000 amalgamate with one or more neighbouring municipalities by 2015. A rural municipality (RM) is a type of incorporated municipality in the Canadian province of Manitoba. Under the province's ''Municipal Act'' of 1997, an area must have a minimum population of 1,000 and a density of less than to incorporate as a rural municipality. Manitoba has 98 RMs, which had a cumulative population of 301,438 as of the 2016 Census. This is a decrease from 116 RMs prior to January 1, 2015, when municipalities with less than 1,000 people were directed by the provincial government to amalgamate with adjoining municipalities to comply with the ''Municipal Act''. Bernice, Manitoba
Bernice is an unincorporated place in the Municipality of Two Borders, south-west of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. History A school was organized in 1888 named Gould School on SW22-5-26W. It was relocated to SE23-5-26 and renamed Bernice School No. 547. The school operated in that location until 1965 when the students were transferred to Napinka Consolidated School No. 2369. In 1906, the locality was a station on the CP Rail Alida subdivision linking Alida, Saskatchewan and Lauder, Manitoba. The station was closed in 1952. The line was abandoned in 1978 after a flood in 1976 washed out the Bernice bridge. A post office was established in 1910 and closed in 1916. The former town of Oak Lake, located within Sifton, annexed by the RM on January 1, 2015 as a requirement of ''The Municipal Amalgamations Act'', which required municipalities with a population less than 1,000 to amalgamate with neighbouring municipalities. Westhope–Coulter Border Crossing
The Westhope–Coulter Border Crossing connects the towns of Westhope, North Dakota and Melita, Manitoba on the Canada–United States border. U.S. Route 83 on the American side joins Manitoba Highway 83 on the Canadian side. Canadian side The initial inspection station was established at Melita about north of the present crossing. A.M. Reekie was the inaugural customs officer 1900–1916. Under the administrative oversight of the Port of Brandon, the office handled goods received by road. Inconveniently located and vulnerable to smuggling, the office moved to the border in 1930, adopting the name of Coulter, the nearest post office. That year, a combined residence/office was erected. The building was replaced in 1947, then in 2014. In 2020, the former border hours of 8am–9pm reduced, becoming 8am–4pm. Antler–Lyleton Border Crossing
The Antler–Lyleton Border Crossing connects the cities of Antler, North Dakota and Pierson, Manitoba on the Canada–United States border. It is reached by North Dakota Highway 256 in Bottineau County on the American side and Manitoba Provincial Road 256 in the Municipality of Two Borders on the Canadian side. This is the westernmost international border crossing in Manitoba; the Manitoba-Saskatchewan-North Dakota tripoint is located only west of this border crossing. 2021 Canadian Census
The 2021 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population with a reference date of May 11, 2021. It follows the 2016 Canadian census, which recorded a population of 35,151,728. The overall response rate was 98%, which is slightly lower than the response rate for the 2016 census. It recorded a population of 36,991,981, a 5.2% increase from 2016. Planning Consultation on census program content was from September 11 to December 8, 2017. Tilston, Manitoba
Tilston is a small community in the Municipality of Two Borders, Manitoba, Canada. It was rated EF2. Infrastructure Tilston was served by the Canadian Pacific Railway until a spring storm in 1976 washed out the rail bridge near Lauder Manitoba. The bridge was not repaired and the line was salvaged beginning in 1978. Two grain elevators remain standing and some of the ties on the former siding are still in place.
