Kanyakumari District
Kanniyakumari district is one of the 38 districts in Tamil Nadu state and the southernmost district in mainland India. It stands second in terms of population density among the districts of Tamil Nadu. It is also the richest district in Tamil Nadu in terms of per capita income, and also tops the state in Human Development Index (HDI), literacy, and education. The district's headquarters is Nagercoil. Kanniyakumari district has a varied topography with the sea on three sides and the mountains of the Western Ghats bordering the northern side. Sivalaya Ottam
Sivalaya Ottam (Tamil Language:சிவாலய ஓட்டம்) (Malayalam language:ശിവാലയ ഓട്ടം) is a ritual marathon undertaken by the devotees to the 12 Siva shrines in the district of Kanyakumari on the day of Sivarathri. From 2014 onwards the day was announced as a local holiday for the district. Ottam route The Ottam begins at ''Thirumalai'', the first Sivalayam and goes all through the next 10 temples before ending at ''Thirunattalam''. Rituals Special pujas will be conducted at temple at ''Thirumalai''. The ritual begin after the devotees taking a holy-dip in the Thamirabharani river at Munchirai, the first Sivalayam. The participants wear saffron robes, hold a palm-leaf fan on their hand and chant the mantra '' "Govinda... Gopaala..." '' all through the whole day of running. Choozhal, Krishnapuram, Piracode is located nearly 60 km from Kanyakumari and 40 km from Trivandrum. It is considered as one of the extreme border of Kerala, India. It comes under Munchirai Municipality.
