Mudrooroo Narogin
Colin Thomas Johnson (21 August 1938 – 20 January 2019), better known by his nom de plume Mudrooroo, was a novelist, poet, essayist and playwright. He has been described as one of the most enigmatic literary figures of Australia and his many works are centred on Australian Aboriginal characters and Aboriginal topics. Also known as Mudrooroo Narogin and Mudrooroo Nyoongah. ''Narogin'' after the Indigenous spelling for his place of birth, and ''Nyoongah'' after the name of the people from whom he claimed descent. ''Mudrooroo'' means '' paperbark'' in the Bibbulmun language group spoken by the Noongar. Narrogin, Western Australia
Narrogin is a large town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, southeast of Perth on the Great Southern Highway between Pingelly and Wagin. In the age of steam engines, Narrogin was one of the largest railway operation hubs in the southern part of Western Australia. History Narrogin is an Aboriginal name, having been first recorded as "Narroging" for a pool in this area in 1869. The meaning of the name is uncertain, various sources recording it as "bat camp", "plenty of everything" or derived from "gnargagin" which means "place of water". The first Europeans into the Narrogin area were Alfred Hillman and his party, who surveyed the track between Perth and Albany in 1835. They passed west of the present site of Narrogin. In time they were followed by the occasional shepherd who drove his sheep into the area seeking good pastures. Aboriginal Australian identity, sometimes known as Aboriginality, is the perception of oneself as Aboriginal Australian, or the recognition by others of that identity. This is often related to the existence of (or the belief of the existence of) ancestors within one's family lines which were directly descended from individuals who lived in the continent of what is now known as "Australia" at a time before the British-led mass immigration programme that occurred post-1788. People can be classified as Aboriginal no matter how minor a part of their family tree is Aboriginal - i.e. an individual can have a vast majority of their ancestry as non-Aboriginal, but still be classified under 21st century definitions as Aboriginal. ''Doctor Wooreddy's Prescription for Enduring the Ending of the World'' is an historical novel by Mudrooroo Nyoongah, first published in 1983. A tragedy, the work explores the reaction of Aboriginal Tasmanians to European colonisation during the nineteenth century. It has several characters based on real-life historical figures, including Truganini, George Augustus Robinson, and Governor George Arthur. The story is told almost exclusively from the perspective of its protagonist, Wooreddy (based on the real-life figure of Worraddy, a Nueonne man from North Bruny Island). A few moments are told from the point of view of 'Mr Robinson'. The novel focuses on the relationships between Wooreddy, his companions, and Robinson, a colonial official dispatched to Tasmania to act as a ' conciliator' between them and the European colonists.
