Movement for the Liberation of the Peoples is a political party in Guatemala. History The movement was registered on December 8, 2016 in the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and its registration process ends on December 7, 2018. The party's general secretary is Byron Alfredo González Tool. It has more than 23,800 members. It is constituted mainly by members of the Peasant Development Committee (Codeca). Its main leaders have been accused of theft of electric power, as well as multiple demonstrations to demand the resignation of President Jimmy Morales. Thelma Cabrera
Thelma Cabrera (born September 21,1970) is an indigenous ( Maya Mam) human rights defender and politician. Cabrera ran for president of Guatemala in 2019 as part of the political party, Movement for the Liberation of Peoples. She finished fourth in the 2019 election garnering 10.3% of the popular vote, the highest vote total for an indigenous candidate in Guatemalan history. Early life Born in a peasant campesino family, Cabrera grew up in El Asintal on the west coast of Guatemala and married at the age of 15. Supreme Electoral Tribunal (Guatemala)
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (officially: Supreme Electoral Tribunal of the Republic of Guatemala) is the highest authority in electoral matters. It is an independent constitutional body of political control, and therefore it is not subordinated to any organism of the State. It is governed by the Electoral and Political Parties Law, Decree 1-85 of the National Constituent Assembly. 2019 Guatemalan General Election
General elections were held in Guatemala on 16 June 2019, to elect the President, Congress and local councils. A second round of the presidential elections was held on 11 August 2019, since no candidate won a majority in the first round. Alejandro Giammattei won the election in the second round of voting. Incumbent President Jimmy Morales was constitutionally barred from running for a second four-year term. Electoral system The President of Guatemala is elected using the two-round system. Jimmy Morales (born James Ernesto Morales Cabrera, ; 18 March 1969) is a Guatemalan politician, actor and comedian. From 2016 to 2020, he served as the 50th president of Guatemala. The Congress of the Republic ( es, Congreso de la República) is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of Guatemala.
