Mountaineering In India
Mountaineering is quite popular in India, since the entire northern and north-eastern borders are the Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world. The apex body in India is the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, which is affiliated to the International Federation of Sport Climbing. India has several premier mountaineering institutes. Changabang
Changabang is a mountain in the Garhwal Division, Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand, India. It is part of a group of peaks that form the northeast wall of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. It is a particularly steep and rocky peak, and all routes on it are serious undertakings. It has been the site of many significant climbs. It does not have a high topographic prominence, being slightly lower than its near neighbour Kalanka to the east, and lower than many other peaks in the immediate vicinity, but its steep rocky profile has made it a more attractive destination than its elevation would indicate. First ascent Changabang was first climbed on 4 June 1974 by an expedition led by Lt. Col Balwant Sandhu and Chris Bonington, via the Southeast Face, leading to the East Ridge. This is the easiest route on the mountain, and one of the few that is primarily a snow/ice climb, as opposed to a rock climbing, rock climb with some snow, ice, or mixed terrain. Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute
Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute (SGMI) is a paramilitary mountaineering school, located in Gangtok, India. History In 1963, the ''Mountaineering Institute'' was established in Gangtok by Indian mountaineer Sonam Gyatso. After the demise of Gyatso in 1968, the institute was renamed ''Sonam Gyatso Mountaineering Institute''. It is currently headed by former Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Sonam Wangyal as its principal. The institute is known for imparting high-altitude mountaineering training to Indian Army, IB, other paramilitary forces such as Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Assam Rifles. Also, it runs short-term courses for civilians. Mohan Singh Kohli
Captain Mohan Singh Kohli (b. 11 December 1931 at Haripur) is an internationally renowned Indian mountaineer. An officer in the Indian Navy who joined the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, he led the 1965 Indian expedition which put nine men on the summit of Everest, a world record which lasted for 17 years. Affiliation Mohan Singh Kohli was President of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation from 1989 to 1993. Asim Mukhopadhyay
Asim Mukhopadhyay ( bn, অসীম মুখোপাধ্যায়, also known as Asim Mukherjee bn, অসীম মুখার্জি) is a famous figure in the history of mountaineering in West Bengal, India. He was the pioneer in India for organizing high altitude scientific expeditions in the Himalayan region. He took part in many such expeditions as a climber between 1959 and 1974, and organised a few more in that period and later as an administrator. He was one of the main organisers of the first successful climbing on Nanda Ghunti and Tirsuli peaks by any non-government Indian organisation. Krushnaa Patil
Krushnaa Patil is an Indian mountaineer. In 2009, at the age of 19, she became the youngest Indian woman to successfully ascent Mount Everest, earth's highest mountain. Her record of the youngest Indian to climb Everest has subsequently been surpassed by younger mountaineers. In 2010, Patil attempted to ascent the Seven Summits. Her last summit on Mount Denali had to be abandoned due to technical reasons, leaving her one short of completing the feat. Ashish Mane
Ashish Mane (Born 14 August 1990) is a professional mountaineer from India. He has scaled Mount Everest (2012), Lhotse (2013), Makalu (2014), Manaslu (2017) and Kanchenjunga (2019). Ashish is the only climber from Maharashtra as of now, to ascend five of the fourteen eight-thousander peaks over 8,000 meters (26,250ft) above sea level. In 2016, he attempted to climb Dhaulagiri, but due to technical reasons he had to quit the expedition. Background Ashish hails from Satara, Maharashtra. He is an alumnus of Raje Shivraya Pratishthan college in Kothrud, Pune. He holds a master's degree in Computer Science. Mount Abu
Mount Abu () is a hill station in the Aravalli Range in Sirohi district of the state of Rajasthan in western India.The mountain forms a rocky plateau 22 km long by 9 km wide. The highest peak on the mountain is Guru Shikhar at above sea level. It is referred to as 'an oasis in the desert' as its heights are home to rivers, lakes, waterfalls and evergreen forests. Gulmarg (), known as Gulmarag (; ) in Kashmiri, is a town, hill station, popular skiing destination, and notified area committee in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, India.
