Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Mountain West Conference men's basketball tournament is held annually to determine the men's basketball champion from the Mountain West Conference. The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Basketball tournament, although they did not in the 1999–2000 season, the conference's first year in existence. The Thomas & Mack Center in Paradise, Nevada has hosted the most tournaments (15), including the last 11 consecutive tournaments. San Diego State have won the tournament six times, the most of any team. The No. 2 seed has won the tournament eight times, the most of any seed. College Basketball
In United States colleges, top-tier basketball is governed by collegiate athletic bodies including National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Each of these various organizations is subdivided into one to three divisions, based on the number and level of scholarships that may be provided to the athletes. Mekeli Wesley
Mekeli Tiu Wesley (born 2 February 1979) is a Fijian-Samoan former basketball player who starred in the United States before embarking on an international professional career. In college, he was the 2001 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year while playing for Brigham Young (BYU). Professionally, Wesley's staggered career began in 2001 and officially ended in 2010. He now works in the insurance industry. Early life Wesley was born in Suva, Fiji as one of five children to parents Hiagi and Susan Wesley, who met one another while attending BYU. He grew up in Provo, Utah and attended Provo High School. While on the basketball team, Wesley guided the Bulldogs to state championships in 1994–95 and 1996–97. Marcus Anthony Slaughter (born March 18, 1985) is an American professional basketball player who last played for AEK Athens of the Greek Basket League and the Basketball Champions League. Standing at , he plays at the center position. He completed his collegiate career playing for the San Diego State Aztecs. Professional career After going undrafted in the 2006 NBA draft, he signed a contract with the Turkish team Pınar Karşıyaka. Wyoming Cowboys Basketball
The University of Wyoming men's basketball program, which competes in the Mountain West Conference, has a lengthy tradition dating back to 1905. Wyoming won the 1943 NCAA championship under Hall of Fame coach Everett Shelton and behind star guard Ken Sailors, who pioneered the jump shot that is now the standard in basketball. 2006 Mountain West Conference men's basketball tournament was played at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado from March 7–10, 2006. Regular season league champion San Diego State held off Wyoming, who were at the time the lowest seed to ever make the championship game (7th), 69–64 in overtime to claim the Mountain West Conference Tournament title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. SDSU became the first school in the league's brief history to win multiple tournament titles (2002 & 2006) With the expansion and addition of TCU to the Mountain West Conference at the start of the 2005–06 athletic year, the conference tournament format was revised to include a play-in game between the 8th and 9th place teams, with the winner advancing to play the regular season MWC champion in the quarterfinals. Danny Granger
Danny Granger Jr. (born April 20, 1983) is an American former professional basketball player who played ten seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in 2005 after a two-year college stint at New Mexico. In 2009, Granger averaged 26 points per game on 45 percent shooting and was named an All-Star and the league's Most Improved Player. An injury to his left knee limited Granger to just five games during the 2012–13 season, and in February 2014, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. The 2005 Mountain West Conference men's basketball tournament was played at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado from March 9–12, 2005. Second-seeded New Mexico upset regular season league champion Utah 60–56 in the championship game to win the Mountain West Conference tournament and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was the first time in the history of the tournament that the league's top two seeds advanced to the title tilt. This marked the final conference tournament played under the league's original 8-team format. TCU joined the Mountain West in the 2005–06 athletic year. The Utah Utes men's basketball team, also known as the Runnin' Utes, represents the University of Utah as an NCAA Division I program that plays in the Pac-12 Conference, and are currently owned by Brigham Young University star Rudi Williams.
