Mountain Park is an unincorporated community in Otero County, New Mexico, United States. It is located at 32.951°N, 105.824°W, and its elevation is 6710 feet. It is the birthplace of Bill Mauldin, an American editorial cartoonist and two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Education It is zoned to Alamogordo Public Schools. Otero County, New Mexico
Otero County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, the population was 63,797. Its county seat is Alamogordo. Its southern boundary is the Texas state line. It is named for Miguel Antonio Otero (born 1859), Miguel Antonio Otero, the territorial governor when the county was created. Otero County includes the Alamogordo Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The county declared a state of emergency in April 2019 when the United States Border Patrol interior checkpoints, federal inspection stations on U.S. Route 70 and U.S. Route 54 were left unstaffed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection as part of the temporary closure of all six checkpoints in the El Paso Sector, which covers West Texas and New Mexico. Bill Mauldin
William Henry Mauldin (; October 29, 1921 – January 22, 2003) was an American editorial cartoonist who won two Pulitzer Prizes for his work. He was most famous for his World War II cartoons depicting American soldiers, as represented by the archetypal characters Willie and Joe, two weary and bedraggled infantry troopers who stoically endure the difficulties and dangers of duty in the field. His cartoons were popular with soldiers throughout Europe, and with civilians in the United States as well. However, his second Pulitzer Prize was for a cartoon published in 1958, and possibly his best-known cartoon was after the Kennedy assassination. Early life Mauldin was born in Mountain Park, New Mexico, into a family with a tradition of military service. His father, Sidney Albert Mauldin (né Bissell, but adopted after being orphaned) served as an artilleryman in World War I.
