Mount William (Antarctica)
Mount William is a prominent snowy mountain in Antarctica, standing tall, and located north-northeast of Cape Lancaster which is the south extremity of Anvers Island, in the Palmer Archipelago. This is the tallest mountain visible from Biscoe Bay, near the south end of the island's Osterrieth Range which also includes Mount Français (the tallest mountain on the island). This mountain was discovered on February 21, 1832, by John Biscoe who incorrectly believed it to be part of the mainland of Antarctic Peninsula, instead of on an island. He named it for William IV of the United Kingdom, William IV, then King of the United Kingdom. Mountaineering, Mountain climbers from the U.K. were the first to ascend this peak, in 1956. Mount William (Mount Duwil)
Mount William (also Mount Duwil) is a mountain of the Grampians Mountain Range, located within the Grampians National Park, in the Australian state of Victoria. The mountain is situated approximately west-northwest of Melbourne on the eastern edge of the national park, approximately drive from Halls Gap. Features and location Mount William is the highest point within the Grampians National Park. Sir Thomas Mitchell reached the summit with a group of explorers in 1836. The first settler in the area was Horatio Wills, who established a sheep run at Mount William in 1840, and named nearby Mount Ararat, after which the town is named. Clarke Range
The Clarke Range, part of the Great Dividing Range, is a rainforest-covered mountain range located in North Queensland, Australia. The range is located approximately from the Coral Sea and west of the coastal city of Mackay. The highest points are the summits of Mount William at about and Mount Dalrymple at . The range is composed of granite rocks. The slopes of Clarke Range form the upper reaches of the Pioneer River valley. Broken River also rises in the range, flowing west to join the Burdekin River. An exploration party led by John Mackay were the first Europeans to cross the range on 18 May 1860. The main road over the range winds sharply and steeply and is not suitable for caravans. The Mount William stone axe quarry is an Aboriginal Australian archaeological site in Central Victoria, Australia. It is located northeast of Lancefield, off Powells Track, north of Romsey and from Melbourne. Known as ''Wil-im-ee Moor-ring'', meaning "axe place" in the Woiwurrung language, the greenstone quarry was an important source of raw material for the manufacture of greenstone ground-edge axes, which were traded over a wide area of south-east Australia. Description The Mount William Aboriginal stone axe quarry comprises the remains of hundreds of mining pits and the mounds of waste rock where Aboriginal people obtained greenstone (diabase), and manufactured stone blanks for axe heads.
