Mount Riley Wilderness
Mount Riley Wilderness is an 8,382-acre (3,392 ha) wilderness area in the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in the U.S. state of New Mexico. Established in 2019, this Wilderness located on the eastern end of the West Potrillo Mountains and bordering the nearby East Potrillo Mountains, contains three shield volcanoes that rise prominently from the Chihuahuan Desert floor. Doña Ana County is located in the southern part of the State of New Mexico, United States. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, its population was 219,561, which makes it the second-most populated county in New Mexico. Its county seat is Las Cruces, the second-most populous municipality in New Mexico after Albuquerque, with 111,385 as of the 2020 U.S. Census. The county is named for Doña Ana Robledo, who died there in 1680 while fleeing the Pueblo Revolt. The West Potrillo Mountains are a mountain range in south central Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. The East Potrillo Mountains are a mountain range in south central Doña Ana County, New Mexico. They are located approximately west of El Paso, Texas, southwest of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and 30 miles east of Columbus, New Mexico. Shield Volcanoes
A shield volcano is a type of volcano named for its low profile, resembling a warrior's shield lying on the ground. It is formed by the eruption of highly fluid (low viscosity) lava, which travels farther and forms thinner flows than the more viscous lava erupted from a stratovolcano. Repeated eruptions result in the steady accumulation of broad sheets of lava, building up the shield volcano's distinctive form. Shield volcanoes are found wherever fluid low-silica lava reaches the surface of a rocky planet.
