Mount Overlord
Mount Overlord is a very large mountain which is an extinct stratovolcano, situated at the northwest limit of Deception Plateau, 50 miles inland from the Ross Sea and just east of the head of Aviator Glacier in Victoria Land. Its asymmetrical cone is on the edge of a plateau above Aviator Glacier. While most of the cone is ice-covered, Mount Overlord does have a 1.2-mile (0.8 kilometer) diameter caldera. Volcanic rocks from the western slope have been dated to about seven million years, so the volcano is thought to be extinct. It was so named by the northern party of New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE), 1962–63, because it "overlords" lesser peaks in the area. Victoria Land
Victoria Land is a region in eastern Antarctica which fronts the western side of the Ross Sea and the Ross Ice Shelf, extending southward from about 70°30'S to 78°00'S, and westward from the Ross Sea to the edge of the Antarctic Plateau. It was discovered by Captain James Clark Ross in January 1841 and named after Queen Victoria. The rocky promontory of Minna Bluff is often regarded as the southernmost point of Victoria Land, and separates the Scott Coast to the north from the Hillary Coast of the Ross Dependency to the south. The region includes ranges of the Transantarctic Mountains and the McMurdo Dry Valleys (the highest point being Mount Abbott in the Northern Foothills), and the flatlands known as the Labyrinth. Mountaineer Range
Mountaineer Range is the range of mountains lying between the Mariner and Aviator Glaciers in Victoria Land, Antarctica. The seaward parts of the range were first viewed by Ross in 1841, and subsequently by several British and later American expeditions. The precise mapping of its overall features was accomplished from U.S. Navy air photographs and surveys by New Zealand and American parties in the 1950s and 1960s. Named by the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE), 1958–59, in keeping with the backgrounds of members of the 1957–58 and 1958–59 field parties who made a reconnaissance of the area, and also in association with the names "Aviator" and "Mariner". The highest point is Mount Murchison, at , on the rugged divide between the Fitzgerald and Wylde Glaciers. Aviator Glacier
Aviator Glacier is a major valley glacier in Antarctica that is over long and wide, descending generally southward from the plateau of Victoria Land along the west side of Mountaineer Range, and entering Lady Newnes Bay between Cape Sibbald and Hayes Head where it forms the Aviator Glacier Tongue. A glacier is a mass of ice with sufficient thickness to flow away from the source area in lobes, tongues or masses. Glaciers are usually found at high latitudes or high elevations. The glacier was photographed from the air by Captain W.M. Hawkes, US Navy, on the historic first flight from New Zealand to McMurdo Sound on December 17, 1955. Ross Sea
The Ross Sea is a deep bay of the Southern Ocean in Antarctica, between Victoria Land and Marie Byrd Land and within the Ross Embayment, and is the southernmost sea on Earth. It derives its name from the British explorer James Clark Ross who visited this area in 1841.
