Mount Morgan (Inyo County, California)
Mount Morgan is a mountain located in northwestern Inyo County, California, in the John Muir Wilderness of the Inyo National Forest. Geography Morgan stands within the endorheic watershed of Owens Lake, now a mostly dry lake since its main source of water, the Owens River, was diverted to supply Los Angeles. The west and north sides of Mt. Morgan drain into Rock Creek, thence into the Owens River. The east and south sides of Morgan drain into Morgan Creek, thence into Pine Creek, and into lower Rock Creek. Climbing Morgan can be accessed by trail from Rock Creek Canyon, above Tom's Place on 395. Its trailhead is at the far end of the lake. The trail is well marked the first to Francis Lake, where it ends. From there it is a scramble up rocky slopes for to the summit. History In 1878 members of the Wheeler Survey, who made the first ascent in about 1870, named the mountain for one of its members, J.H. Morgan of Alabama. Mount Morgan () is located in the Lewis Range, Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. Mount Morgan is situated along the Continental Divide. Oldman Lake is immediately east of the peak. Geology Like other mountains in Glacier National Park, Mount Morgan is composed of sedimentary rock laid down during the Precambrian to Jurassic periods. Mount Morgan Mine was a copper, gold and silver mine in Queensland, Australia. Mining began at Mount Morgan in 1882 and continued until 1981. Over its lifespan, the mine yielded approximately of gold, of silver and of copper. The mine was once the largest gold mine in the world. The Mount Morgan Mine also operated assay laboratories, brickworks, foundry, power house and workshops (including carpentry, electrical and plumbing) as part of its operations. The Mount Morgan Mine also contained Fireclay Caverns excavated to provide clay for the mine brickworks. Wealth from the Mount Morgan mine funded Persian oil exploration, establishing the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which became BP in 1954. It was formerly known as Mount Morgan Technical College. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 4 December 2015. History Mount Morgan State High School was established in the central Queensland mining town of Mount Morgan in 1912, as one of Queensland's first secondary schools. It commenced operating on the Mount Morgan Technical College site, which the two institutions shared until 1964. Mount Morgans, known as Mount Morgan until 1899, is an abandoned town in Western Australia northeast of Perth and southwest of Laverton on the original Malcolm-Laverton Road, in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia.
