Mount Hope Cemetery (Watertown, South Dakota)
Mount Hope Cemetery is a municipal cemetery located at 11th Street East and 14th Avenue North, Watertown, South Dakota. Influenced by the 19th century rural cemetery movement, the 40-acres of land that would become the cemetery was purchased by the city from the Winona and St. Peter Railroad for $120. The earliest recorded burial was in 1881.Office of the sexton, Tom Weeks. As of April 2017, there have been about 12,300 interments at Mount Hope. Mausoleum The central mausoleum at Mount Hope Cemetery was built in 1911 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The mausoleum has 100 crypts. It is considered full, and casket burials are no longer performed. Around 2011, a receiving room was converted into a columbarium, with cinerary urns displayed behind glass for public viewing. Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, founded in 1838, is the first municipal cemetery in the United States. It is the burial site of Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass. Situated on of land adjacent to the University of Rochester on Mount Hope Avenue, the cemetery is the permanent resting place of over 350,000 people. The annual growth rate of this cemetery is 500-600 burials per year. The cemetery hosts the sculpture ''Defenders of the Flag'', a Civil War monument made in 1908 by the American sculptor Sally James Farnham. Hill County is a county located in the U.S. state of Montana. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,309. Its county seat is Havre. It lies along the United States border with Canada, abutting Alberta and Saskatchewan. Part of its territory is within the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation, which is held by the federally recognized Chippewa-Cree Tribe. History The first European-American settlement in the future county area was Fort Assinniboine, garrisoned by the United States Army in 1879. Mount Hope Cemetery is a cemetery in Lansing, Michigan. History Mount Hope Cemetery opened as the new city cemetery for Lansing, Michigan in June 1874. It was formerly the John Miller Farm. Between 1874 and 1881, the city vacated the Lansing City Cemetery and moved about 1,000 graves to Mount Hope. Frederick W. Higgins, superintendent of Detroit's Woodmere Cemetery, planned the drives and Henry Lee Bancroft, superintendent of the Lansing City Cemetery, developed the landscape. A section was platted in 1874 for the State Reform School (later the Boys' Vocational School) for the remains of 61 boys who died between 1856 and 1933. The city's Civil War Soldier's Monument, a large obelisk, was dedicated in 1878. In 2014, a grave marker for the final victim of the 1927 Bath School bombing was dedicated. Gustavus Franklin Swift
Gustavus Franklin Swift, Sr. (June 24, 1839 – March 29, 1903) was an American business executive. He founded a meat-packing empire in the Midwest during the late 19th century, over which he presided until his death. He is credited with the development of the first practical ice-cooled railroad car, which allowed his company to ship dressed meats to all parts of the country and abroad, ushering in the "era of cheap beef." Swift pioneered the use of animal by-products for the manufacture of soap, glue, fertilizer, various types of sundries, and even medical products. Swift donated large sums of money to such institutions as the University of Chicago, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and YMCA. He established Northwestern University's "School of Oratory" in memory of his daughter, Annie May Swift, who died while a student there.
