Mount Cornish Homestead
Mount Cornish Homestead is a heritage-listed homestead at Cornish Creek near Muttaburra, Barcaldine Region, Queensland, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 August 1992. History Mount Cornish was established on the head of the Thomson River in 1872 as an outstation of the Bowen Downs Station which was taken up by William Landsborough in 1861. The Edkins family, along with 12,000 head of cattle were sent to manage Bowen Downs Station, from which Mount Cornish was later resumed. Prior to the construction of a wooden house in 1876, the Edkins lived in a simple mud hut with a roof of bark. In 1883, a stone section was added to the wooden house. It comprised two rooms surrounded by a verandah. The white stone was quarried approximately one mile from the site and it is thought to have been constructed by two highly skilled German masons. Cornish Creek
Cornish Creek is a former rural locality in the Barcaldine Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Cornish Creek had a population of 16 people. On 22 November 2019 the Queensland Government decided to amalgamate the localities in the Barcaldine Region, resulting in five expanded localities based on the larger towns: Alpha, Aramac, Barcaldine, Jericho and Muttaburra. Most of Cornish Creek was incorporated into Muttaburra, except for a small part of eastern Cornish Creek which was incorporated into Aramac. Geography The Thomson River forms the south-western boundary of the locality. Cornish Creek flows through the locality from east ( Upper Cornish Creek) to west ( Tablederry) where it becomes a tributary to the Thomson River. All watercourses in the locality flow into the Lake Eyre drainage basin. Muttaburra is an outback town and locality in the Barcaldine Region, Queensland, Australia. Muttaburra was the discovery site of the ''Muttaburrasaurus'', one of Australia's most famous dinosaurs. Geography Muttaburra is in the central west of Queensland. The town is located on the banks of the Thomson River, which is part of the Lake Eyre drainage basin. The region is with a sub-basin of the Great Artesian Basin. The Great Artesian Basin supplies water from bores to the towns of Muttaburra and Aramac. Homestead (buildings)
A homestead is an isolated dwelling, especially a farmhouse, and adjacent outbuildings, typically on a large agricultural holding such as a ranch or station. In North America the word "homestead" historically referred to land claimed by a settler or squatter under the Homestead Acts (USA) or Dominion Lands Act (Canada). The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. As at 5 April 2020 there are 1790 places on the Queensland Heritage Register, including the Story Bridge in Brisbane and the Ross River Meatworks Chimney in Townsville. The Thomson River is a perennial river that forms part of the Lake Eyre Basin, situated in the central west and western regions of Queensland, Australia. Much of the course of the river comprises a series of narrow channels synonymous with the Channel Country and the Galilee subregion. The river was named in 1847 by the explorer, Edmund Kennedy, in honour of The Hon. Sir Edward Deas Thomson , the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales at the time of discovery. Bowen Downs Station is a pastoral lease that has operated both as a cattle station and a sheep station. It is located about east of Muttaburra and north west of Aramac in the outback of Queensland. It is watered by the Thomson River and tributaries Reedy Creek and Cornish Creek that all run through the property. History The traditional owners of the area are the Iningai peoples. William Landsborough
William Landsborough (21 February 1825 – 16 March 1886) was an explorer of Australia and notably he was the first explorer to complete a North-to-South crossing of Australia. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Council. Early life Landsborough was born in Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Rev Dr David Landsborough (a clergyman, entomologist and artist) and his wife Margaret, ''née'' McLeish. William Landsborough was educated in Irvine and migrated to Australia in 1842, several years after his brothers James and John.
