Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region (MABR) is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve located on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It was designated in 2000 by UNESCO to protect a large second-growth coast Douglas fir ecosystem in the watersheds of the Little Qualicum and Englishman Rivers from being developed. History Early history The watersheds of the Little Qualicum and Englishman Rivers on the northeastern slope of Mount Arrowsmith were once home to a large old-growth forest dominated by coast Douglas fir. The forest was clearcut in the early 1900s but eventually rebounded as the trees matured. In the mid-1990s, local logging industries pressured the provincial government to permit clearcutting in the area as the trees neared their harvestable size. Local conservation groups protested additional logging of the recovering forest. MacMillan Provincial Park
MacMillan Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. Located west of Qualicum Beach and east of Port Alberni, the park straddles Highway 4 and the Island Rail Corridor in central Vancouver Island. It is nestled on the western shore of Cameron Lake, and protects the delta of the Cameron River. The park is home to a famous, stand of ancient Douglas fir, known as Cathedral Grove, which draws visitors from all over the world. The park provides the only highway-accessible protected old-growth Douglas-fir forest in British Columbia. In 2007 Cathedral Grove made the short list on CBC's competition Seven Wonders of Canada. Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada, on central Vancouver Island, that encompasses the entire southern shore of Cameron Lake. The Island Rail Corridor line to Port Alberni passes through the park. Englishman River Falls Provincial Park
Englishman River Falls Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. It is located west of Parksville and borders the small community of Errington on Vancouver Island. Features Short year round access hiking trails and bridges access both upper and lower falls on the Englishman River. In 2019 new trails were under development in partnership with a community group. The base of the falls is a popular swimming hole with 15 to 20 ft cliff jumping. Salmon spawning can be observed in season. The campground has 107 sites, most of which are vehicle access and can be reserved during summer. There is a large day use area. The park covers 97 hectares and includes old-growth and second growth Douglas fir, cedar, hemlock and maple forest surroundings. The Regional District of Nanaimo is a regional district located on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Nanoose First Nation
The Nanoose First Nation, also known the Snaw-naw-as First Nation, is a First Nations government located on central Vancouver Island in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, in the vicinity of the community of Nanoose Bay. They are Coast Salish people, and one of the most northern tribes on the east side of Vancouver Island. They speak Hul’q’umi’num’, which is 1 of 3 branches of the Halkomelem dialect spoken from Nanoose to Oregon. The Snaw-naw-as are named after the sole survivor of a battle in the 1800’s. The name comes from the word “Naus” which means “the way in the harbour”. There are many spelling variants of Snaw-naw-as such as Snonoose, Sno-no-was, Nuas, and Nanooa and Snuwnuwus.
