Moulthun Ly
Moulthun Ly (born 20 November 1991) is an Australian chess player. He was awarded the Grandmaster title by FIDE in 2016 to become Australia's sixth grandmaster (GM). He is the first person born in Cambodia to become an International Master or a Grandmaster. Chess career Ly earned his first two International Master (IM) norms in 2006 at the World Open in Philadelphia and the Essent Open in Hoogeveen. He attained his final IM norm at the Doeberl Cup in Canberra in 2010. He was awarded the title of International Master the following year. Ly picked up his first GM norm by winning the Sydney International Chess Open in 2014 with a score of 7.0/9. He achieved his last two GM norms in 2016 at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, where he scored 6.0/10; and the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival, where he scored 5.5/9. Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival
The Gibraltar International Chess Festival is a chess tournament held annually at the Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar. Its eleven days of competition usually run from late January to early February. The inaugural edition, then known as the ''Gibtelecom Gibraltar Chess Festival'', took place in 2003, when fifty-nine competitors took part, of whom 24 held the FIDE Grandmaster title. In 2011 the festival was renamed to the ''Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival'' when Tradewise Insurance Company Ltd became the new primary sponsor. Beginning in 2019 Tradewise no longer sponsored the tournament and the name was changed to the ''Gibraltar International Chess Festival''. Max Illingworth
Max Illingworth (born 5 November 1992) is an Australian former chess player, and current chess trainer and writer. In 2022 he started playing poker professionally. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 2016, becoming the fifth Australian to achieve this. Illingworth won the Steiner Medal (for the Australian Player of the Year) in 2011, 2012 and 2015. His current FIDE rating is 2493. Ian Rogers (chess Player)
Ian Rogers (born 24 June 1960) is an Australian chess player, trainer and writer. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 1985. Personal life Before turning professional, Rogers completed a BSc (Meteorology) from the University of Melbourne. He is married to Cathy Rogers, herself an International Arbiter, Woman FIDE Master, and a lawyer. He is a distant cousin of Australian cricketer Chris Rogers. Career Rogers is the first Australian-raised chess grandmaster (Walter Browne achieved the title earlier but grew up in the US and represented Australia only from 1969–1972). Rogers attained the Grandmaster title in 1985 after becoming an International Master in 1980. He was Australia's highest-rated player for over twenty years, and he represented Australia at fourteen Chess Olympiads (twelve of them on first board). Zhao Zong-Yuan (; born 26 June 1986) is an Australian chess Grandmaster. , he was the third-ranked active chess player in Australia. Early life Zhao was born in Beijing. He grew up in Coffs Harbour, Australia, a pharmacy graduate from the University of Sydney. He has since completed his degree in medicine at the same university. Chess career Zhao became the youngest Australian international master at the age of 14, and was a member of the NSW Junior Chess League. Zhao won the 1999 Queensland Under-18 Championship with a score of 8/8 and then finished just half a point behind Darryl Johansen in the Australian Championship proper, ending with a remarkable 4/4 burst.
