Mouchel
Mouchel Group was an infrastructure and business services company headquartered in Woking, United Kingdom. It provided advisory, design, project delivery and managed services associated with infrastructure and business services across the highways and transportation, local government, emergency services, property, health, education and utility markets across the world. In June 2015 Mouchel was purchased by Kier Group for £265 million. This included both the Mouchel Infrastructure Services and Mouchel Business Services divisions. Subsequently, Mouchel Infrastructure Services was rebranded as Mouchel Consulting, with the Business Services sector falling under the Kier brand. Grant Rumbles stepped down as CEO with Haydn Mursell, CEO of Kier Group, assuming the role. Kier sold Mouchel Consulting to WSP Global in October 2016 and the Mouchel name was dropped. Parkman Group plc was a leading firm of engineering consultants. It merged with Mouchel in 2003. History The consulting practice Ward Ashcroft was founded in Liverpool in 1888, predominantly as a water and public health business. In 1948, Brigadier Parkman joined the firm to create Ward Ashcroft and Parkman. By the mid-1960s it had diversified into highways and structural engineering and from the 1970s it had spread its wings internationally, working in Africa and Portugal and later Eastern Europe. The company advised on outsourcing following the rapid expansion of public sector term contracts in the 1980s. Louis Gustave Mouchel
Louis Gustave Mouchel (11 January 1852 – 27 May 1908) was the founder of Mouchel, one of the United Kingdom's largest engineering consultancies. Career Born and educated in Cherbourg, Mouchel trained as a naval officer and then as an engineer at the Government School of Mines. He then joined the Department of Highways. In 1875, he moved to Briton Ferry in Wales and formed the ''Cardiff Washed Coal & Fuel Company''. He became the agent for a system of reinforced concrete developed by François Hennebique which he referred to as ''ferroconcrete''. In 1907 he founded L. G. Export House in Woking, Surrey, is a tall office building formerly also known as the BAT Building during its tenancy by British American Tobacco. It was the tallest in Woking and among the five tallest buildings in Surrey until the construction of Victoria Square in September 2019. Its height is spread over its 18 floors (15 above ground). History Export House was the significantly tallest aspect of the Surrey town regeneration after World War II, which centred on the expansion and improvement of satellite towns, in this county being Guildford and Woking. Briton Ferry
Briton Ferry ( cy, Llansawel) is a town and community in the county borough of Neath Port Talbot, Wales. The Welsh name may indicate that the church, ''llan'', is protected from the wind, ''awel''. Alternatively, ''Sawel'' may be a derivative of Saul, St Paul's earlier name. He once landed at Briton Ferry. An alternative Welsh name unused today is ''Rhyd y Brython'', a direct translation of Briton Ferry. The Normans referred to the River crossing as ''La Brittonne'' and '' Leland'' in 1540 ''as Britanne Fery.'' Kier Group plc is a British construction, services and property group active in building and civil engineering, support services, and the Private Finance Initiative. Founded in 1928 in Stoke-on-Trent it initially specialised in concrete engineering before expanding into general contracting and house-building. François Hennebique
François Hennebique (26 April 1842 – 7 March 1921) was a French engineer and self-educated builder who patented his pioneering reinforced-concrete construction system in 1892, integrating separate elements of construction, such as the column and the beam, into a single monolithic element. The Hennebique system was one of the first appearances of the modern reinforced-concrete method of construction. Hennebique had first worked as a stonemason, later becoming a builder, with a particular interest in restoration of old churches. Hennebique's Béton Armé system started out by using concrete as a fireproof protection for wrought iron beams, on a house project in Belgium in 1879. He realised however, that the floor system would be more economic if the iron were used only where the slab was in tension, relying on the concrete in the compression areas. Battersea Power Station
Battersea Power Station is a decommissioned Grade II* listed coal-fired power station, located on the south bank of the River Thames, in Nine Elms, Battersea, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was built by the London Power Company (LPC) to the design of Leonard Pearce, Engineer in Chief to the LPC, and CS Allott & Son Engineers. The architects were J.
