Mothers Of Men
''Mothers of Men'' is a 1917 silent film directed by Willis Robards, promoting woman's suffrage. The seven-reel drama is considered lost. A five-reel re-edited version also directed by Robards was released in 1921—following ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment—under the title ''Every Woman’s Problem''. This version survives through a single 35mm print preserved by the British Film Institute. The 1921 re-release was restored in 2016, in a collaboration between the BFI and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. The courtroom drama stars Dorothy Davenport as a judge who wins election as Governor of California. A moral issue arises when her husband is sentenced to death, and she must choose whether to pardon him. Arthur Tavares
Arthur Tavares was an American actor and film editor who was active in Hollywood from the 1910s through the 1930s. Biography Arthur was born in San Francisco to Jayme Tavares and Maria Botelho, both of whom were Portuguese immigrants. During the 1910s, Tavares appeared as an actor in silent films in Hollywood. During the 1920s, he changed gears and became an editor. At the beginning of the sound era, Tavares worked on Spanish-language versions of American films. Women's suffrage, the legal right of women to vote, has been depicted in film in a variety of ways since the invention of narrative film in the late nineteenth century. Some early films satirized and mocked suffragists and Suffragettes as "unwomanly" "man-haters," or sensationalized documentary footage. Suffragists countered these depictions by releasing narrative films and newsreels that argued for their cause. After women won the vote in countries with a national cinema, women's suffrage became a historical event depicted in both fiction and nonfiction films. William Wallace Halleck Reid (April 15, 1891 – January 18, 1923) was an American actor in silent film, referred to as "the screen's most perfect lover". He also had a brief career as a racing driver. Early life Reid was born in St. Louis, Missouri, into a showbusiness family. His mother, Bertha Westbrook, was an actress, and his father, James Halleck "Hal" Reid, worked successfully in a variety of theatrical jobs, mainly as playwright and actor, traveling the country. As a boy Wallace Reid was performing on stage at an early age, but acting was put on hold while he obtained an education at Freehold Military School in Freehold Township, New Jersey. He later graduated from Perkiomen Seminary in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1909. Billie Bennett
Billie Bennett (October 23, 1874 – May 19, 1951) was an American film actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 50 films between 1913 and 1930. She was born in Evansville, Indiana, and died in Los Angeles, California. Author E. J. Fleming writing in his 2004 book, ''The Fixers: Eddie Mannix, Howard Strickling and the MGM Publicity Machine'', states that when she ceased making films at the end of the silent era, she ran a high class bordello in an exclusive part of the Los Angeles area. Bennett's girls were made up to look like movie stars of the period, even undergoing surgical alterations to achieve the illusion.
