Motala Longwave Transmitter
The Motala longwave transmitter ( sv, Motala långvågsstation) is a longwave broadcasting station, established in 1927 in Motala, Sweden. Its aerial is of the T-type spun between two free standing steel framework towers, which still exist today. The transmitter was in service until 1962, when the new Orlunda longwave transmitter went in service. In 1991 Sveriges Radio AB shut down the Orlunda longwave transmitter. Since 1977, the Swedish Broadcasting Museum ( sv, Sveriges Rundradiomuseum) is co-located at the Motala longwave transmitter building, from which sometimes transmissions with low power in the longwave range take place. These transmissions may not be received well from abroad. Motala () is a locality and the seat of Motala Municipality, Östergötland County, Sweden with 29,823 inhabitants (41,956 in the entire municipality) in 2010. It is the third largest city of Östergötland, following Linköping and Norrköping. Motala is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern and is regarded as the main centre of both the Göta Canal and the surrounding lake region. History Motala Church dates from the 13th century. For several centuries, Motala remained a small village, mainly regarded as a stopping post on the road to the nearby town of Vadstena, one of the cultural centres of medieval Sweden. In radio, longwave, long wave or long-wave, and commonly abbreviated LW, refers to parts of the radio spectrum with wavelengths longer than what was originally called the medium-wave broadcasting band. Longwave Transmitter Orlunda
The Orlunda longwave transmitter was a longwave broadcast facility in central Sweden which broadcast Sveriges Radio Programme 1 from 1962 to 1991. The facility is currently in use as a museum. Planning and construction The Swedish Telecom Administration Board and its technical department, Televerket, had begun plans for an upgraded longwave transmitter to serve central Sweden as early as the 1940s. The original facility, located in central Motala, was both antiquated and poorly situated; the transmitter was inefficient and staff were needed on site to operate it day and night, and signal fading occurred as close as 80 kilometres away. After numerous studies it was determined that a site east of the town of Vadstena would provide a clear signal to the surrounding area.
