Moster Repuplic
Moster is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1916 until 1963, when it was merged into the new, larger municipality of Bømlo. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Mosterhamn, where the Old Moster Church is located (the oldest surviving stone church in Norway). The municipality encompassed the southeastern part of the island of Bømlo and the island of Moster as well as many surrounding islets. History The municipality of Moster was established on 1 July 1916 when the old municipality of Finnås was split into the three new municipalities: Moster (population: 1,316), Bømlo (population: 1,217), and Bremnes (population: 3,411). Sunnhordland
Sunnhordland is a traditional district in the western region of Norway. The district consists of the southern coastal regions of the old Hordaland county (now part of Vestland county). It includes the areas that surround the mouth of the Hardangerfjorden and the surrounding islands. The municipalities of Sveio, Etne, Stord, Bømlo, Fitjar, Kvinnherad, and Tysnes (and sometimes Austevoll) make up the district of Sunnhordaland. Bømlo (island)
Bømlo (or Bømmeløy) is an island in Vestland county, Norway. At , it is the largest island in the island municipality of Bømlo, lying just off the western coast of Norway. The island sits at the northern entrance to the vast Hardangerfjorden, west of the Stokksundet strait, south of the Selbjørnsfjorden, and east of the North Sea. In the 1800s, the Kulleseid Canal was built across a small isthmus in the central part of the island, giving a shortcut from the eastern side of the island to the western side of the island. The large island of Stord lies just to the east and the smaller island of Moster lies to the southwest. There are hundreds of other small islands surrounding Bømlo. Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. Schei Committee
The Schei Committee ( no, Schei-komitéen) was a committee named by the Government of Norway to look into the organization of municipalities in Norway post-World War II. It convened in 1946, and its formal name was (The 1946 Committee on Municipal Division). Its more commonly used name derives from the committee leader, Nikolai Schei Nikolai Andreas Schei (9 May 1901 – 25 May 1985) was a Norwegian jurist and civil servant. Moster (island)
Moster is an island in Bømlo municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The island lies just south of the large island of Bømlo, surrounded by the Bømlafjorden. The Røyksund Channel is a small navigable channel that separates Moster from the island of Bømlo. There is one bridge on the Norwegian County Road 542 that crosses the channel, connecting the island to the rest of the municipality, which in turn is connected to the mainland via the Triangle Link. The island is the location of the village of Mosterhamn. The thousand-year old Old Moster Church is located in Mosterhamn, and the newer Moster Church is also located on the island. Old Moster Church
Old Moster Church ( no, Moster gamle kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Bømlo Municipality in Vestland county, Norway, and it is one of the oldest churches in all of Norway. It is located in the village of Mosterhamn on the island of Moster. It used to be the main church for the Moster parish which is part of the Sunnhordland prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white stone church was built in a long church design in the 12th century using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 80 people. Mosterhamn or simply Moster is a village in Bømlo municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the small island of Moster in the southeastern part of the municipality of Bømlo.
