Bartholomew Mosse
Bartholomew Mosse (1712 – 16 February 1759) was an Irish surgeon and impresario responsible for founding the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. Early life Bartholemew Mosse was born in Dysart, 2 km east of Portlaoise (then called Maryborough), the fifth son of seven children born to William Mosse, a Protestant clergyman, and Martha Boyle. Bartholomew apprenticed with Dr. John Stone as a barber-surgeon from 1729-1733, when he passed examination by the surgeon-general. He married Mary Elizabeth Mallory in 1734, and they had a son, Michael, who was born in 1737. While historical records are unclear, it appears that both mother and infant died shortly thereafter. In 1738, he was appointed surgeon in charge of the draft of troops to Menorca, following which he spent time traveling through Europe. Rotunda Hospital
The Rotunda Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal an Rotunda; legally the Hospital for the Relief of Poor Lying-in Women, Dublin) is a maternity hospital on Parnell Street in Dublin, Ireland, now managed by RCSI Hospitals. The eponymous Rotunda in Parnell Square is no longer a part of the hospital complex. History The hospital was founded by Bartholomew Mosse, a surgeon and midwife who was appalled at the conditions that pregnant women had to endure, in George's Lane in March 1745. It was granted by Royal Charter on 2 December 1756 by King George II. Lying-in is an archaic term for childbirth (referring to the month-long bed rest prescribed for postpartum confinement). The venture was very successful and Mosse raised money through concerts, exhibitions and even a lottery to establish larger premises. Hans (John Rudolf) Lachmann-Mosse, ''till 1911'' Hans Lachmann (August 9, 1885, Berlin - April 18, 1944, Oakland, California, US) was a German publisher, director during the Weimar years of the Rudolf Mosse media empire whose titles included the ''Berliner Morgenpost'' and the ''Berliner Tageblatt.'' Katharine Mosse (born 20 October 1961) is a British novelist, non-fiction and short story writer and broadcaster. She is best known for her 2005 novel ''Labyrinth'', which has been translated into more than 37 languages. Isaac Albert Mosse (1 October 1846 – 31 May 1925) was a German judge and legal scholar. Mosse's importance lies in his work on Japan's Meiji Constitution and his continuation of Litthauer's Comments on the German Commercial Code. Biography Mosse was born into a prominent Jewish family in Grätz, in Prussia's Grand Duchy of Posen. His father, Dr. Markus Mosse, was a noted physician, and the most distinguished of his six brothers was Rudolf Mosse. Mosse attended the '' gymnasiums'' in Lissa and in Goben. Anthony Robin Le Clerc Mosse (born 29 October 1964 in Hong Kong) is a former New Zealand swimmer who competed at two Summer Olympic Games and three Commonwealth Games. He won one Olympic bronze medal, as well as two gold medals, one silver and one bronze at the Commonwealth Games. George Mosse
Gerhard "George" Lachmann Mosse (September 20, 1918 – January 22, 1999) was an American historian, who emigrated from Nazi Germany first to Great Britain and then to the United States. He was professor of history at the University of Iowa, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and also in Israel, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Best known for his studies of Nazism, he authored more than 25 books on topics as diverse as constitutional history, Protestant theology, and the history of masculinity. Store Mosse National Park
Store Mosse ("Big Marsh") is a national park in Småland in southern Sweden, located in the municipalities of Vaggeryd, Gnosjö and Värnamo. In total Store Mosse covers some ; of these, some were designated national park in 1983. It has the largest boggy grounds south of Lapland and is an important area for birds and provides unique habitats for other animals and plants. The park has over of walking trails, three cabins available for overnight stay and a large bird watching tower. Access to the park is free; guided tours are available all summer. There are also guided snowshoe tours on the bog in the summer. Store Mosse National Park lies in the South Swedish highlands and the South Småland peneplain.
