Windom Shale Member
The Windom shale or Windom member is a member of the Moscow formation in New York. It preserves fossils going back to the Givetian stage of the middle Devonian. The Windom shale is widely known for its high quality trilobite fossils. History Early Study One of the first people who may have described the scientific importance of the Windom was Jacob Green. In his book ''A monograph of the trilobites of North America: with coloured models of the species'', he mentions an abundance of “'' Calymene bufo''” in similar conditions to that of the Windom. Later on in 1935, David M. Delo’s “Revision of the Phacopid trilobites” would name the genus ''Greenops'' in honor of Jacob Green’s work. In 1840, the geologist Lardner Vanuxem first described the “ Hamilton Formation” in Hamilton, New York. Formation (stratigraphy)
A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics (lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). It is the fundamental unit of lithostratigraphy, the study of strata or rock layers. A formation must be large enough that it can be mapped at the surface or traced in the subsurface. Formations are otherwise not defined by the thickness of their rock strata, which can vary widely. They are usually, but not universally, tabular in form. Hamilton Group
The Hamilton Group is a Devonian-age geological group in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is present in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, northwestern Virginia and Ontario, Canada. It is mainly composed of marine shale with some sandstone. There are two main formations encompassed by the group: the Mahantango Formation and the Marcellus Shale. In southwestern Virginia, where the two sub-units are not easily distinguishable, the Hamilton Group is broadly equivalent to the Millboro Shale or Millboro Formation. The group is named for the village of Hamilton, New York. These rocks are the oldest strata of the Devonian gas shale sequence. Ludlowville Formation
The Ludlowville Formation is a geologic formation in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. It dates to the Devonian period. Subunits Owasco The Owasco is a thin distinct silty unit. It has sharp distinct boundaries at its top and base. It is flaggy, locally fossiliferous and is displays cross bedding in some locations. The upper contact maybe a diastem, rather than an erosional disconformity. This unit is fairly thin only 1-2' thick in outcrops. It thickens westward. Faunal Stage
In chronostratigraphy, a stage is a succession of rock strata laid down in a single age on the geologic timescale, which usually represents millions of years of deposition. A given stage of rock and the corresponding age of time will by convention have the same name, and the same boundaries. Rock series are divided into stages, just as geological epochs are divided into ages. Stages can be divided into smaller stratigraphic units called chronozones.
