Morton is a village in Tazewell County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,117 at the 2020 census. Morton is a suburb of Peoria and is part of the Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located southeast of Peoria. The community holds an annual Morton Pumpkin Festival in the second week of September, and claims that 82 percent of the world's canned pumpkin is produced in Morton, earning it the designation "Pumpkin Capital of the World". This nickname had been lived up to because of the institution of the Libby's pumpkin factory. The annual Morton Pumpkin Festival gathers thousands of tourists from around Illinois and even some from other northern Midwest states, like Indiana and Wisconsin. The Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball team is part of the University of Iowa athletics department. The Hawkeyes have played in 28 NCAA Tournaments, eight NIT Tournaments, won eight Big Ten regular-season conference championships and won the Big Ten tournament three times. Dave Kindred (born April 12, 1941) is an American sportswriter. Early life and education Kindred was born on April 12, 1941, in Atlanta, Illinois, USA. When he was a teenager his mother bought him a typewriter for his birthday and he wrote about Stan Musial. At around the same age, he aspired to become a sportswriter like Red Smith and would pick up his columns from the train station every Sunday morning. Kindred attended Atlanta High School where he played on their basketball team, leading them to the 1959 regional championship. He continued his aspirations to become a sportswriter although he was discouraged by his English teacher who said, "Maybe one day you can grow up and be a foreign correspondent." After graduating, Kindred attended Illinois Wesleyan University on a journalism scholarship and competed on their Division III baseball team. David Boyd Burritt (born c. 1955) is an American businessman. He is the chief executive officer of U.S. Steel since May 2017. Early life Burritt was born in St. Louis, Missouri. John C. "Jay" Ackerman (November 23, 1933 – July 23, 2007) was an American farmer and politician. He served on the Morton Park Commission from 1967 to 1975. Ackerman also served on the Tazewell County Board from 1972 to 1978. Ackerman served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1979 to 1983 and from 1987 to 1999. He was a Republican. Ackerman served on the Governor's Board of Agriculture Advisers from 1984 to 1987. Morton High School is the four year public high school of Morton Community Unit School District 709 in Morton, Illinois. Band The Morton High School marching band has become very well known regionally in recent years. The marching band website reports they have done well, both in local competitions and in national competitions sponsored by the Bands of America association. The high school band was also invited to play at the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama, becoming the first band in central Illinois history do so.
