Morten Halle
Morten Halle (born 7 October 1957) is a Norwegian jazz musician (saxophone), composer and music arranger. He was born in Oslo, and he is known from the city's jazz scene and from a series recordings. (in Norwegian) Career Halle participated in various small bands at the Oslo Jazz scene in the late 1970s, when he studied music at the University of Oslo 1981–86, he was with the band Cutting Edge, and from 1987 in a quartet with John Eberson (guitar), Bjørn Kjellemyr (bass), and Finn Sletten/Pål Thowsen (drums). He has also played with the big band Oslo 13, with Knut Værnes Band, Jon Balke, Søyr, Chipahua and Geir Holmsen Band. He has been in the lineups of Jazzpunkensemblet, Desafinado, Horns for Hire with Torbjørn Sunde and Jens Petter Antonsen, Jon Balke's Magnetic North Orchestra, Geir Lysne Listening Ensemble, Søyr and Metropolitan (band). Oslo 13
1300 Oslo (active from 1979 in Oslo, Norway) was a Norwegian jazz band originally called Oslo 13 (1979–93), founded and operated the first two years by Bror Hagemann and continuated by Jon Balke. In 1994 the band got a joint leadership with Trygve Seim, Morten Halle and Torbjørn Sunde, and changed their name. The band's first release was the album ''Anti-therapy'' (1981). Oslo 13 was awarded Spellemannprisen in 1988 for the album ''Off balance''. The follow up ''Nonsentration'' (1992) also was an acclaimed album. The last album from Oslo 13 was a live album from 1992. Oslo Jazzfestival
Oslo International Jazz Festival (Oslo Jazzfestival, established 1986 in Norway) is a Norwegian music event, held in August, with a focus on music form the jazz genre, performed on stages in Oslo. History The pilot project (1984–1985) was initiated by Aage Teigen. The first festival in 1986, had more than forty volunteers and the event received 350 000 Norwegian kroner in donations from Oslo Municipality. The music was largely traditional jazz, Dixieland, New Orleans jazz, etc. The organization became a Foundation in 1995, led by Truls Helweg, chairman of the board since 1995) and permanently appointed General Manager (Aage Teigen), at a time when the budget was over 5 million Norwegian kroner. Teigen was in 2002 awarded Oslo City Artist Award for his commitment. In 2006, the festival held 70 concerts (of these 15 free) with 450 musicians on 18 stages with around 70,000 spectators. Jon Balke
Jon Georg Balke (born 7 June 1955) is a Norwegian jazz pianist who leads the Magnetic North Orchestra. He is the younger brother of saxophonist Erik Balke. Career Balke started playing classical piano but switched to blues at 12, though he performs within several genres. At the age of 18 he joined Arild Andersen's quartet. By the mid-1980s he worked on his own and would become one of Norway's leading jazz composers. He was active in the groups of Radka Toneff and in the Afrofusion group E'olén before joining Oslo 13 and Masqualero in the early 1980s. From 1989 he focused on his own projects, such as JøKleBa (with Audun Kleive and Per Jørgensen) and the Magnetic North Orchestra for which he composed the commissioned work ''Il Cenoneat'' to Vossajazz 1992. Balke formed the percussion group Batagraf in 2002, and created the concept work Siwan' with singer Amina Alaoui in 2007. Helge Iberg
Helge Iberg (born 27 March 1954 in Skien, Norway) is a Norwegian contemporary composer. Iberg studied musicology, history of ideas and religious studies at the University of Oslo under the tutorship of composers Olav Anton Thommessen and Ragnar Søderlind. As a composer, Iberg has made the transition from jazz to contemporary orchestral music. Iberg’s works have been commissioned and performed by several of Norway’s major symphony orchestras, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival and the Oslo Chamber Music Festival. Iberg is a recipient of a Prix Italia Work of the Year Award for his opera ''Det ondes problem'' (1990) as well as nominations to the Edvardprisen and the Spellemannprisen – the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy. Metropolitan (band)
Metropolitan are an American four-piece indie rock group from Washington, D.C. Metropolitan began as a collaboration between guitarists John Masters and Aidan Coughlan in late 1998, and they recorded and released their debut record, "Side Effects," in 1999. After undergoing several lineup changes since the group's incarnation, Metropolitan became a trio: Saadat Awan and Shyam Telikicherla joined the group. Geir Lysne Listening Ensemble is a 20-piece big band led by Geir Lysne established in 1999. The band has gained international fame, especially in Germany for the performances of Lysnes compositions. The music is in the genre jazz and contemporary music. Biography For the work ''M.B.'' the ensemble was nominated for the Edvard Prize (2000). Magnetic North Orchestra
Magnetic North Orchestra established in Oslo, Norway (1992–2005) was a Norwegian jazz orchestra, created and led by Jon Balke. MNO was originally a jazz ensemble inspired by Oslo 13, put together with strings and percussion. As Olympic musical ambassador from 1993 to 1994, for the 1994 Winter Olympics at Lillehammer, Jon Balke created the work ''Magnetic North'' for a larger group, and under this name (MNO) he has toured in Europe, USA and Japan. MNO was further developed with fourteen string musicians from "Stavanger Symfoniorkester" for the production ''Grand Magnetic'' (2001), and in a version with the "TrondheimSolistene". Jens Petter Antonsen (born 2 August 1963) is a Norwegian musician (trumpet), known studio musician from a large number of recordings and television shows. He is the son of bandleader Odd R. Torbjørn Sunde (born 16 February 1954) is a Norwegian jazz trombonist who has worked with Terje Rypdal, Edward Vesala, Jon Balke, Knut Værnes, Rickie Lee Jones, Randy Crawford, Dr. John, Jan Eggum, Jan Garbarek, and Mezzoforte. Desafinado
"Desafinado" (a Portuguese word, usually rendered into English as "Out of Tune", or as "Off Key") is a 1959 bossa nova song and jazz standard composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim with lyrics (in Portuguese) by Newton Mendonça. Background "Desafinado" was originally a response to critics who claimed that bossa nova was a new genre for singers who can't sing. The English language lyrics were written by Jon Hendricks and "Jessie Cavanaugh" (a pseudonym used by The Richmond Organisation). Another English lyric, more closely based on the original Portuguese lyric (but not a translation) was written by Gene Lees, and appears on some recordings as well.
