Morristown is a village in Belmont County, Ohio, United States. The population was 248 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Wheeling metropolitan area. History Morristown was platted in 1802. The village was named for Duncan Morrison, a pioneer settler. A variant name was "Morris Town". A post office called Morristown has been in operation since 1807. Battle Of Morristown
The Battle of Morristown was a battle of the American Civil War fought in present-day Hamblen County, Tennessee on October 28, 1864. Union forces under General Alvan C. Gillem attacked Confederate forces under General John C. Vaughn who were defending Morristown, Tennessee. Vaughn's Confederates were routed and Gillem's forces pursued them into nearby Russellville, Tennessee. Background Morristown, Tennessee sat at the crossroads of the East Tennessee & Virginia Railroad and the turnpike to Cumberland Gap. This railroad location meant that troops were moving through Morristown as early as Spring 1861. The town would remain a key military crossroads for the rest of the war. USS ''Morristown'' (ID-3580) was a cargo ship that served in the United States Navy during World War I, from 1918 to 1919. The cargo ship SS ''Morristown'' was built by the Standard Shipbuilding Company, Shooters Island, New York, in 1918. The U.S. Navy acquired her for World War I service from the Russian Volunteer Fleet on 18 October 1918 at Hoboken, New Jersey, assigned her the Identification Number (Id. No.) 3580, and commissioned her the same day. Assigned to the Naval Overseas Transportation Service (NOTS), ''Morristown'' sailed from New York City on 27 October 1918 in convoy for Europe, arriving at La Pallice, France, on 15 November 1918 to debark her cargo of United States Army supplies and airplanes. She made two more runs to European ports with ammunition and general cargo before departing Dartmouth, England, for the United States East Coast on 25 May 1919. Morristown Regional Airport (formerly called Moore–Murrell Airport) is a city-owned public-use airport located four nautical miles (7 km) southwest of the central business district of Morristown, a city in Hamblen County, Tennessee, United States. It was opened in 1953. The manager of the airport was Evelyn Bryan Johnson until her death on May 10, 2012. The Morristown Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district embracing much of the village of Morristown, Ohio, United States. Founded along the National Road, Morristown prospered as long as the road was heavily travelled, but it stagnated after railroads became prominent. Because the community neither died nor prospered, it has retained its mid-nineteenth-century architecture into the present, making it one of the National Road's least-changed settlements.
