Morris Winchevsky School
The Morris Winchevsky School (founded in 1928) is a supplemental Jewish school in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The focus of the curriculum is on strengthening ties to Jewish culture and heritage within a secular humanist framework. Key focuses are Tikkun Olam and social justice. The school's curriculum is an experiential and historical one, focusing on the nearly four thousand-year history of the Jewish People, culminating in the current period of secularization. It is intended to instill in students an appreciation of Hebrew and Yiddishkayt (Yiddish language and culture) as well as the culture of Jews around the world. The three programs it runs are: Kinder Kapers (a preschool program); the Morris Winchevsky School (a modular approach to SK-Grade 6 Jewish education); and the Secular B'nai Mitzvah Program. Secular humanism is a philosophy, belief system or life stance that embraces human reason, secular ethics, and philosophical naturalism while specifically rejecting religious dogma, supernaturalism, and superstition as the basis of morality and decision making. Tikkun Olam
''Tikkun olam'' ( he, תִּיקּוּן עוֹלָם, , repair of the world) is a concept in Judaism, which refers to various forms of action intended to repair and improve the world. In classical rabbinic literature, the phrase referred to legal enactments intended to preserve the social order. In the ''Aleinu'' prayer, it refers to the eradication of idolatry. In Lurianic Kabbalah, the "repair" is mystical: to return the sparks of Divine light to their source by means of ritual performance. United Jewish Peoples' Order
The United Jewish People's Order is a secular socialist Jewish cultural, political and educational fraternal organization in Canada. The UJPO traces its history to the founding of the Jewish Labour League Mutual Benefit Society in 1926. History Early history After the Russian Revolution and the creation of the Communist Party, divisions within the Arbeiter Ring became increasingly bitter. In Toronto, the pro- Bolshevik women withdrew from the Ring in 1923, forming the Jewish Working Women's League (''Yiddish Arbeiter Froyen Farein''). When it was clear that control of the organization would stay in the hands of those critical of the Revolution, the men also withdrew and formed the Jewish Labour League Mutual Benefit Society in 1926, which became a social and intellectual home for Jewish Communists. Camp Naivelt
Camp Naivelt (, 'Camp New World') is a left-wing secular Jewish camping community in Brampton, Ontario, founded in 1925 as a children's summer camp, Camp Kinderland (). It is affiliated with the United Jewish People's Order. Early years The camp was established as Kinderland, a children's camp, in 1925 by the pro- Bolshevik Jewish Women's Labour League, the women's auxiliary of the Jewish Labour League Mutual Benefit Society. They leased some property at Eldorado Mills along the Credit River, initially owned by the Canadian National Railway. In 1936 the League attempted to purchase about of the property. The CNR was openly resistant to selling to Jewish organizations, posting vicious anti-Semitic signs at the entrance to discourage the land purchase. Toronto Jewish Folk Choir
The Toronto Jewish Folk Choir is Canada's oldest Jewish choral group. It consists of approximately 30 singers and is conducted by Alexander Veprinsky. Its repertoire, sung in four-part harmony, encompasses a wide range of secular Jewish music, classical works on Jewish themes and songs of many countries. The group specializes in Yiddish folk songs and songs of a working class character. The Choir is based at Toronto's Winchevsky Centre and is affiliated with the United Jewish Peoples' Order. History The amateur choral group was founded in 1925 by Jewish immigrant laborers, and was originally called the Freiheith Gezangs Farein (Freedom Singing Society). Morris Winchevsky
Morris Winchevsky (Yiddish: מאָריס װינטשעװסקי; born as Leopold Benzion Novokhovitch; August 9 1856–March 18 1932), also known as Ben Netz, was a prominent Jewish socialist leader in London and the United States in the late 19th century. Born in Jonava, Lithuania, in 1856, Winchevsky later moved to London where, already a well known socialist, he founded the ''Der Poylisher Yidl'' (The Little Polish Jew), one of the first Yiddish daily socialist newspapers; and the ''Arbeter Fraynd'', the first Yiddish-language anarchist newspaper.
