The Morris Major and Austin Lancer are passenger car models that were produced by BMC Australia between 1958 and 1964. Series I (1958 to 1959) The Morris Major and Austin Lancer were introduced in March 1958,BMC-Leyland Australia Heritage Group, Building Cars in Australia, 2012, page 213 designated DO1101 and developed from the contemporary Wolseley 1500 and Riley One-Point-Five models BMC-Leyland Australia Heritage Group, Building Cars in Australia, 2012, page 40 then on sale in the United Kingdom. The Major and Lancer, along with the Wolseley 1500 were produced at BMC Australia's Victoria Park plant at Zetland in Sydney, Australia and were unique to that country, containing up to 98% local content. Australian produced Wolseley 1500s were also given the DO1101 model code. British Motor Corporation (Australia) was a motor manufacturing company formed in Australia in 1954 by the merger of the Austin Motor Company (Australia) and Nuffield (Australia). This followed the merger in 1952 of the Austin Motor Company and the Nuffield Group in the United Kingdom to form the British Motor Corporation. Following further corporate changes in the UK in the late 1960s, BMC Australia was absorbed into the newly established British Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia, the name of which became Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia in 1972, ''The Macquarie Dictionary of Motoring'', pp. 272-273 and then JRA Limited in March 1983. Rack And Pinion
A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that comprises a circular gear (the '' pinion'') engaging a linear gear (the ''rack''). Together, they convert rotational motion into linear motion. Rotating the pinion causes the rack to be driven in a line. Conversely, moving the rack linearly will cause the pinion to rotate. A rack and pinion drive can use both straight and helical gears. Though some suggest helical gears are quieter in operation, no hard evidence supports this theory. Helical racks, while being more affordable, have proven to increase side torque on the datums, increasing operating temperature leading to premature wear. Straight racks require a lower driving force and offer increased torque and speed per percentage of gear ratio which allows lower operating temperature and lessens viscal friction and energy use.
