Morpeth, New South Wales
Morpeth is a suburb of the city of Maitland in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is on the southern banks of the Hunter River at the border between the City of Maitland and Port Stephens Council LGAs. The major population centre, where almost all residents of the suburb reside, is the historical town of Morpeth which takes its name from Morpeth, Northumberland, near Newcastle upon Tyne, in England. History The traditional owners and custodians of the Maitland area are the Wonnarua people. The town of Morpeth was initially created through the private actions of Edward Charles Close, who selected a property of 1,000 hectares and developed it as a river port from 1831-1841. The lieutenant built his house, known as Closebourne, on the property. Morpeth is a historic market town in Northumberland, North East England, lying on the River Wansbeck. Morpeth is a railway station on the East Coast Main Line, which runs between and . The station, situated north of Newcastle, serves the market town of Morpeth, Northumberland, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. History The station was opened by the Newcastle and Berwick Railway on 1 March 1847. Morpeth Secondary School is a secondary school in situated in Bethnal Green with nearly 1200 pupils. The current headteacher is Jemima Reilly. Morpeth's pupils come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds; over half are from Bangladeshi backgrounds, while one-third are white British. In 2009 Ofsted highlighted Morpeth as one of twelve outstanding schools serving disadvantaged communities. Morpeth specialises in the Arts and Music, but has also gained some fame in junior table tennis, and offers a wide range of extracurricular activities. Douglas Morpeth
Sir Douglas Morpeth (6 June 1924 – 26 August 2014) was a Scottish officer in the British Army and a chartered accountant. Biography Sir Douglas was born in Perth, Scotland and educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh. On leaving school in 1942, he volunteered for the army and subsequently served in the Royal Artillery in India, Burma and Malaya. He was demobilised in 1947 with the rank of captain. He attended the University of Edinburgh from 1947 to 1949 where he graduated with a business studies degree. While at the University, Sir Douglas met Anne Rutherford Bell whom he subsequently married in May 1951, after which they moved to London. In 1951 he joined the Honourable Artillery Company ("HAC"), the oldest regiment in the British Army, and commanded the 1st Regiment HAC, Royal Horse Artillery, from 1964 to 1966. Morpeth Dock
Morpeth Dock is a dock at Birkenhead, Wirral Peninsula, England. The dock is situated between the River Mersey and Egerton Dock. History Built between 1844 and 1847, it is named after Lord Morpeth, the 7th Earl of Carlisle, who was the First Commissioner of Woods and Forests. The dock was opened in 1847, and the branch dock was built between 1866 and 1868. By 1872, the dock had been significantly remodelled with the branch dock and a canal basin for the GWR's goods station. Morpeth Dock Goods station was used by the GWR as the Birkenhead end of cross-river traffic to the Manchester Dock. Morpeth Dock provided berths for the Bibby Line, the Brocklebank Line, Holt and the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, all of which worked to the Far East.
