Mormon Mesa is a mesa between the Virgin River and the Muddy River in Clark County, southern Nevada. In the south above the confluence of the Muddy and Virgin Rivers, it rises to a height of 1893 feet (577 meters). It extends northward to the foot of the Mormon Mountains and East Mormon Mountains, and east from the Muddy River to the Virgin River, and to where it overlooks Toquop Wash at . A mesa is an isolated, flat-topped elevation, ridge or hill, which is bounded from all sides by steep escarpments and stands distinctly above a surrounding plain. Overton, Nevada
Overton is a community that is part of the unincorporated town of Moapa Valley in Clark County, Nevada. Overton is on the north end of Lake Mead. It is home to Perkins Field airport and Echo Bay Airport. History Overton was originally settled in 1869 by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, led by Helaman Pratt. A regular branch was organized there in 1883. In the 1880s, Overton was the location of the only store in the lower Moapa Valley and attracted people from neighboring localities who arrived in Overton to buy supplies. In the 1930s, the town of St. Thomas was submerged by water as Lake Mead was being filled, and the majority of its population relocated to Overton. ''Double Negative'' is a piece of land art located in the Moapa Valley, Nevada, Moapa Valley on Mormon Mesa (or Virgin River, Virgin River Mesa) near Overton, Nevada, Overton, Nevada. ''Double Negative'' was created in 1969 by artist Michael Heizer, and consists of a trench dug into the earth. Description The work consists of a long trench in the earth, 30 feet (9 m) wide, deep, and 1500 feet (457 m) long, created by the displacement of 244,000 tons of rock, mostly rhyolite and sandstone. Two trenches straddle either side of a natural canyon (into which the excavated material was dumped). The "negative" in the title thus refers in part to both the natural and man-made negative space that constitutes the work. The work essentially consists of what is not there, what has been displaced.
