Mormon Bar (Fraser River)
Mormon Bar is an unincorporated community in Mariposa County, California. It is located south-southeast of Mariposa, at an elevation of 1772 feet (540 m). Mormon Bar is located near State Route 49. It was settled during the California Gold Rush. Mormons occupied the place during the winter of 1849/50. It was first mined by veterans of the Mormon Battalion in 1849 after their discharge in 1847. They did not stay very long, and other miners came and occupied the site. At one time there was a significant Chinese presence there. Mormon Bar is California Historical Landmark #323. Mormon Battalion
The Mormon Battalion was the only religious unit in United States military history in federal service, recruited solely from one religious body and having a religious title as the unit designation. The volunteers served from July 1846 to July 1847 during the Mexican–American War of 1846–1848. The battalion was a volunteer unit of between 534 and 559 Latter-day Saint men, led by Mormon company officers commanded by regular U.S. Army officers. During its service, the battalion made a grueling march of nearly 2,100 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California. The Battalion’s march and service supported the eventual cession of much of the American Southwest from Mexico to the United States, especially the Gadsden Purchase of 1853 of southern Arizona and New Mexico. California Gold Rush
The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) was a gold rush that began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The news of gold brought approximately 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad. The sudden influx of gold into the money supply reinvigorated the American economy; the sudden population increase allowed California to go rapidly to statehood, in the Compromise of 1850. The Gold Rush had severe effects on Native Californians and accelerated the Native American population's decline from disease, starvation and the California genocide.
