Women's Trade Union
The Women's Trade Union ( sv, Kvinnornas fackförbund) was a trade union in Sweden organizing female workers between 1902 and 1909. Its members were generally seamstresses, but the union also had a presence in other women-dominated sectors. In the year of its foundation, the union had 642 members. As of 1906, the union had 32 sections with a combined membership of 1,037. Early period In 1897 a Committee for Women's Agitation had been formed by Stockholms allmänna kvinnoklubb. The committee was reorganized as the Women's Trade Union in 1902. At that time women were not allowed to join the Swedish Tailoring Workers Union, and the new union was founded as a reaction to this. Anna Sterky
Ane Cathrine "Anna" Sterky née Nielsen (1856–1939) was a Danish-Swedish politician (Social Democrat), trade union organiser, feminist and editor, chiefly active in Sweden. Sterky worked as a seamstress in Denmark, where she was active in the Danish trade union movement. In 1891, she moved to Sweden with the Swedish trade union organiser Fredrik Sterky, with whom she had a relationship; they never married, but she used his surname. She was a pioneer in her work to build up trade unions for women, and she also worked for the creation of a social democratic women's group within the party. She was a member of the Swedish Social Democratic Party from 1900 to 1925, chairwoman of the Women's Trade Union (1902–1907), editor of the magazine ''Morgonbris'' together with Maria Sandel (1904–1909) and honorary chairwoman of the Social Democratic Women in Sweden (1920–1925). Maria Sandel
Maria Gustafva Albertina Sandel (1870–1927) was a Swedish textile worker, writer, feminist, and social critic. Born in Stockholm, she was forced to leave school at the age of 12, and began to work to contribute to her family income. Despite her lack of formal education, she wrote articles for several journals, and later published her own novels. Often regarded as the Fredrika Bremer of the proletariat, her works are social commentary, especially on the conditions of working-class women. Life Maria Sandel was born on 30 April 1870 in Stockholm, Sweden to a unmarried mother. Her mother, Maria Charlotta Killander, was a seamtress, and her father, Carl Gustaf Sandell, was a domestic worker. Born into poverty, she grew up in Kungsholmen and was compelled to quit school at the age of 12. Aged 17, she traveled to the US to work as a house maid, to overcome her family's financial stress. Social Democratic Women In Sweden
The Social Democratic Women in Sweden ( sv, Sveriges socialdemokratiska kvinnoförbund ), or "S-women" ( ), is the women's wing of the Swedish Social Democratic Party. It was established in 1920 by representatives from 120 local Social Democratic women’s clubs from all over Sweden. At the time of its foundation, there had been local women's clubs of the Party since the foundation of the '' Stockholms allmänna kvinnoklubb'' in 1892, but there was no national women's club. The most important reason for the funding of a national women’s league was to promote and activate women politically, as well as to acquire access to power and provide a political power base for women. The Scandinavian Journal of History is a peer-reviewed journal in English, published since 1976 under the auspices of the historical associations of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. It aims to survey themes in recent Scandinavian historical research, concentrating on national particularities and developments. According to the publisher, it strives to give priority to efforts of placing Scandinavian developments into a larger context, that is studies explicitly comparing Scandinavian processes and phenomena to those in other parts of the world.
